The lowdown
- This is quiet, proper chalkstream fishing in a peaceful setting south of Stratton. The thatched fishing hut is a handy base between sessions.
- The beat is double bank, so there’s fishing on both sides of the river. Bank fishing is available throughout the Wrackleford beats.
- The upper section is the livelier bit, with a straighter, faster flow. Worth a look when you fancy covering moving water and quicker runs.
- Downstream, the river settles into gentle long turns. That change of character should suit careful upstream dry-fly work and tidy nymphing.
- There are deep pools towards the bottom of the beat. They add a bit of depth and variety, especially when fish are holding away from the faster water.
- Waders are helpful, but definitely not essential. Wellies are enough for bank fishing, and the estate says wading isn’t required.
- It’s a compact beat for one or two rods, with up to two rods permitted. The Stratton fishing can also be grouped with Muckleford and 7 Hatches for a bigger party.
- The trout season runs from 1 April to 15 October. Grayling fishing then has its own ticket period from 16 October to 31 January.
- Day tickets run from dawn until dusk. The estate also offers guiding and instruction if you want a hand with the water, the fly choice or the approach.
Methods: This is chalkstream fly fishing. An upstream dry fly or nymphing approach should fit the faster upper water, long turns and deeper lower pools; guiding and instruction are available from the estate.

Fly fishing to the flow

- Approach from downstream and keep low.

Bait to consider
