The lowdown
- The stretch starts at the bottom end of the Common Mead Lane section and runs upstream to Eccliffe Mill pool.
- Watersmeet is the standout feature, where the River Lodden joins the Stour. Worth a good look when the rivers have a bit of colour.
- The water is generally shallow, with gravel runs that should suit a float-led approach nicely.
- The association has developed five or six swims between Watersmeet and the mill. The mill itself adds another two swims.
- It’s described as having some good-looking swims and being rarely match fished, so it should have a quieter feel than busier match stretches.
- Chub, roach, dace, perch and grayling are the named fish for this section. Plenty there to keep a roving angler busy.
- Trotting a float through the glides is the obvious starting point. Keep the tackle light and cover the crease and the steadier edges.
- A small feeder could do the job when the river is carrying a touch more pace, especially around the gravelly water and deeper-looking lines.
- The river season runs from 16 June to 15 March. Keep an eye on changing conditions through the season, as the shallow character will make low, clear water especially noticeable.
- Fishing in the mill pool is from the bank only. The mill-pool island is out of bounds, so don’t be tempted by a cheeky wander across.
Methods: Light trotting looks bob on for the shallow gravel runs, with a small feeder worth a go when there’s more colour or pace. Roam between the developed swims and fish the crease, glides and steadier water carefully.

Key rules
- A current Environment Agency rod licence is required on association waters.
- The river fishing season is 16 June to 15 March.
- Fishing in the mill pool is from the bank only.
- Fishing from the mill-pool island is not permitted.
Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
