Catholics
Catholics is one of G&DAA’s most prolific River Stour stretches, tucked near Marnhull and split across pegs 43–50 and 52–62. It’s a proper chub water, with enough pace for stick-float fishing and plenty of chances for roach and dace too.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a cracking bit of the Upper Stour, run by Gillingham & District Angling Association.
- The stretch is split into two blocks: pegs 43–50, then 52–62. Handy enough, once you know which bit you’re heading for.
- Peg 45 is the “big hole”, peg 47 is the “telegraph”, and peg 50 is the “swimming pool”. Proper river names, those.
- The association says chub are produced throughout the season, averaging about 2 lb. Expect plenty of bites if they’re on the munch.
- Roach and dace show in many swims, so it isn’t just a chub job. A few official species are also listed, including perch, pike, rudd and eel.
- There’s usually enough pace for a lovely stick-float approach. Read the crease, run the float through and keep the bait working in the flow.
- Maggot, caster and bread punch can all catch. If the usual bits aren’t getting a response, bread flake is the cheeky change-up worth trying.
- For pegs 43–50, use the hard-standing car park at St Mary’s Catholic School and park on the side beneath the trees.
- Pegs 52–62 have verge parking beside the concrete road. Farm vehicles use this access, so leave the road clear and don’t cause a faff.
- The season runs from 16 June to 15 March. The supplied postcode is DT10 1JX, and the association doesn’t state a separate night-fishing facility here.
Methods: Stick-float fishing is the obvious starting point, with maggot, caster or bread punch for busy swims. Switch to bread flake when the fish are proving awkward.
