The full rundown on Chigborough Lakes

Chigborough Farm & Fisheries sits on Chigborough Road, around Maldon and Heybridge in Essex. It’s a proper-sized setup too, with the wider Chigborough site covering about 130 acres and the fishery first opening back in 1981. So there’s plenty going on, whether you fancy a bend in the rod after carp and coarse fish or want to chase trout on the fly.

For coarse and carp anglers, the named waters are May Water, Heybridge Mere and Scraley Mere. There are three mature coarse lakes in total, covering about 30 acres, with carp to about 40lb according to the fishery. Catfish, perch, tench, bream, roach, rudd and pike are also listed, so you’re not just turning up hoping for one sort of bite. There should be a few angles to work out.

Booking is required before you fish. The current guidance refers coarse and carp anglers to a Watercraft ticket, with the intended lake selected during booking. Once you arrive, you can choose any available swim on that lake, which is handy if you like having a look before committing to a peg. Only Longchuck swims are available to book in advance under the stated 2026 trial, so check the booking setup carefully before parting with your quid.

The listed ticket price is £30 for one catch-and-release fish, with extra fish costing £9 each when pre-booked online or £10 each when taken on the day. That price is shown on the current Game & Fly page, so it’s worth checking the exact ticket details when booking, especially if you’re heading for the coarse lakes. For 2026, the fishery is trialling Swimbooker for availability, tickets and bookings. Telephone booking is available if online booking gets a bit faffy.

There’s fly fishing here as well, with about 30 acres of trout water and three trout lakes listed on the events page. Home Water and Rook Hall are named waters, stocked with quality trout sourced from Norfolk. The annual trout season runs from November 1 through the end of June. Home Water is closed for fly fishing from July through October, while deeper Rook Hall remains open in summer subject to weather. Big-game angling on Home Water is listed from April 1 through October 31, so check which ticket fits your plan.

The lakes are open all year except Christmas Day, and booked anglers can start at their allotted time, with bailiffs checking bookings during the day. Pack a large, clean, bone-dry landing net, unhooking mat and sling, as they’re required. Carp anglers need at least 15lb mainline, with no braid for carp mainlines, and a maximum of three rods is allowed. Pike fishing runs from October through March with specified trace and wire requirements. Keep noise down, stay within one swim of your rods, and get your licence sorted before setting off.
