River Wye — Lower Lydbrook

Wyebank at Lower Lydbrook is a cracking 300-yard left-bank beat on the middle/lower Wye. Fast water, proper salmon lies and some tasty coarse fishing make it a handy all-rounder when the river’s got a bit of colour.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is 300 yards of left-bank fishing in Lydbrook, between Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth. The bank is well maintained and access is described as excellent.
  • The flow is quite fast, so expect lively water rather than sleepy little glides. Barbel are particularly worth targeting when they’re on the munch.
  • There’s an island in the stretch, plus the Wyebank run, which is packed with cribs. Those bits of rough structure create salmon lies and add plenty of interest for a fly rod.
  • Named features include Wyebank crib, lower crib and Boat Rock. Proper watercraft matters here — find the crease, seams and steadier edges beside the faster push.
  • The Wharf Pool is a mid-river hole with a smooth bedrock floor. It’s a standout feature and the sort of place to keep in mind when the river level or colour changes.
  • The beat is described as excellent grilse water when conditions are right. Salmon fishing is for one fly rod, so it’s a quiet, focused setup rather than a crowded chucking match.
  • Coarse anglers get room for one or two rods. Trotting or feeder work should suit the faster flow, with barbel and dace named as targets.
  • Chub fishing can be superb, with fish reported to 5 or 6 pounds. Look for steadier water and crease lines, especially where the pace eases around the features.
  • Wild trout are present, with no stocking in this part of the Wye for many years. Grayling are sometimes present for autumn fishing, adding a cheeky seasonal bonus.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: For coarse fishing, trot or feeder the faster runs and work the creases around the cribs, island and deeper water. Salmon and trout are fly-fishing options, with the Wyebank run and its lies the obvious places to study.
