We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Amesbury on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • The fishery sits south of River Park recreation ground, right on the Upper Avon at the edge of Durrington.
  • It’s a fairly open bit of river, with few trees or shrubs getting in the way of casting. Bob on if you like fishing comfortably without loads of faff.
  • The paths are maintained by a local residents group, so access along the stretch is kept in hand.
  • The lower section is the wading bit. Depth varies from mid-calf to around waist height, so take care and keep an eye on the flow.
  • There’s substantial annual ranunculus growth in the lower section. Expect plenty of underwater greenery and some interesting water around it.
  • The stretch is immediately below a private trout fishery, which regularly restocks. That helps explain the good head of trout here.
  • Outside busy local-use periods, the water is generally tranquil. It can be a cracking place when things settle down.
  • The club calls it particularly worthwhile in the early and late season, so those cooler, quieter periods look the proper ticket.
  • Local children may fish between the white markers during school holidays, after school, at weekends and in hot weather. Give them room and keep it friendly.
  • The nearby Stonehenge Fishery is less than half a mile away, handy if you’re planning a wider look at the local Avon fishing.

Methods: The facts don’t specify named tactics, but the open banks should make casting straightforward, while the lower section offers wading water around the ranunculus. Trout and grayling are the main draw.
