Horseport

Horseport is a short but proper fishy bit of the Hampshire Avon near Fordingbridge, run by Christchurch Angling Club. It fishes on both sides of the A338 flyover, with smooth, deep channels and a cracking reputation for specimen roach and other quality fish.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open East Mills Flume on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • It’s a compact stretch, but don’t let the size fool you. Horseport is noted for specimen fish, with deep, smooth channels running through the venue.
  • The water extends on both sides of the A338 flyover, giving the stretch a distinctive feel and access beneath or around the road crossing.
  • Roach are a big draw, especially through the colder months. Fish over 2 lb are caught each year, which is a proper incentive to get the float gear out.
  • Trotting is one of the key approaches here. The steady-looking channels suit a controlled run-through, particularly once the weed growth starts dropping back later in the season.
  • Bread flake and casters are recommended productive baits. Keep things simple and work the swim properly rather than rushing through the peg.
  • Barbel, chub and dace add plenty of interest, while pike give you another option when the conditions or mood change. There are also bream, perch and eels in the water.
  • The stretch holds smooth, deep channels throughout, so look for the crease and any variation in pace. That depth can be handy when the river has a bit of colour or the weather turns colder.
  • Roach fishing should be especially appealing in the colder months, while reduced weed later in the season makes trotting less of a faff and easier to control.
  • Night fishing is permitted, and the venue also allows game fishing. Up to two rods are allowed, but remember the lure restriction for coarse fish and pike.
  • Access is via the A338 from the Ringwood direction, using the Fordingbridge slip road, then the B3078 and the tarmac drive. Use the club’s designated parking area; dogs aren’t permitted.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Trotting with bread flake or casters is the obvious starting point, especially once weed growth eases later in the season. Feeder work and pike fishing are also options, with lure restrictions applying to coarse fish and pike.
