Ibsley Stream
Ibsley Stream is a cracking little offshoot of the Hampshire Avon near Ringwood. Narrow, wooded and properly intimate, it offers coarse sport alongside permitted game fishing, with Christchurch Angling Club looking after the water.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open East Mills Flume on Live River Levels

The lowdown
- This is roughly half a mile of attractive distributary water at Ibsley. It’s a very different beast from the broad main river — tighter, quieter and nicely tucked away.
- The stream was originally managed as a trout water, and the club historically stocked it with brown trout. Game fishing remains permitted.
- Coarse fishing is allowed during the traditional coarse-fishing season, and the club reports excellent sport. There’s plenty to keep the float and feeder angler interested.
- Expect a narrow, wooded waterway rather than a big open beat. That means an intimate feel, with bankside cover likely to shape your casting and swim choice.
- The nearby Hampshire Avon has classic clear chalk-stream character, with quicker sections, weirs and tree-lined banks. That gives the whole area a proper river feel.
- For coarse fish, trotting and light feeder work are the obvious starting points. Keep things tidy and accurate in the tighter swims, rather than lobbing gear about.
- The named fish list includes bream, barbel, chub, perch, pike, roach, eels and brown trout. Salmon and sea trout are also named, so mind the seasonal restrictions.
- Lure anglers need to take note: spinners, spoons and Devon minnows are banned when targeting coarse fish or pike. The aim is to reduce the chance of hooking out-of-season salmon or sea trout.
- You can fish with up to two rods, and up to two guests are allowed under club conditions. Dogs are permitted, toilets are listed, and the Clubmate app helps with access points and parking.
- It’s open all year subject to the stated rules, but night fishing and extended fishing hours are not allowed. Fishing is limited to the specified access times, so check those before setting off.
Methods: Float fishing and trotting should suit the narrower stream, with a light feeder handy when the flow or depth calls for it. Game fishing is also permitted, subject to the club’s seasonal rules and access conditions.
