We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Stockbridge Main on Live River Levels
The lowdown
- This is a short beat of under 100 yards, set in the picturesque gardens and grounds of Kingfisher Lodge.
- The fishing is from the left-hand bank when looking upstream. No wading is permitted, so it is a proper bank-fishing session.
- It is a famous section of the River Test, but the setup here sounds nicely peaceful rather than hectic. Bob on for a gentle day out.
- The beat suits one or two rods, making it a tidy option for a solo visit or a shared session with a fishing pal.
- The published fishing period runs from May 1 to September 30. Half-days are available from 9:30am to 1:00pm or 3:00pm to sunset.
- Full-day fishing runs from 9:30am to sunset. That gives you plenty of time to settle in, work the water and enjoy the grounds without a faff.
- There is an all-weather gazebo overlooking the river, so you have somewhere handy to relax between casts. Non-fishing guests are welcome too.
- A small lake sits on the property, although it contains no fish. The main attraction is the River Test beat itself.
- Children under 16 are not permitted and dogs are not allowed. All fish must be released, with brown trout, rainbow trout and grayling named for the beat.
Methods: This is bank-fished water rather than a wading beat. Keep things relaxed and work the available river water from the left bank, with the gazebo handy between casts.
