The full rundown on Hereford Angling Club Lakes and Pools
Hereford & District Angling Association controls two coarse-fishing pools near Hereford: Brookmeadow/Pencoyd Pool and Belmont Pool. They’re both members-only waters, so an ordinary day ticket won’t get you through the gate. Membership and advance booking are the key bits to sort before packing the gear.
Brookmeadow is the more structured-looking venue, with 16 platformed pegs around a mature, roughly rectangular 2.35-acre pool. Two pegs at the dam-wall end are disabled-friendly, while parking and a ramp make getting to the bank easier. There’s also an otter fence around the fishery.
The pool reaches roughly 8–9 feet in its deepest areas and has a broad coarse mix. Carp, including commons and mirrors, are listed alongside tench, bream, perch, roach, rudd and chub. The association says its carp grow beyond 20 lb, giving the place a bit of proper lump appeal. Pike are specifically absent from the listed Brookmeadow stock.
Belmont has a different feel. It’s a mature, silty-bottomed lake in Belmont Country Park, split into two sections by a culvert beneath the country road. Only the northern section is available for fishing, with six fishable pegs available daily by advance booking. There are no formal pegs or fishing platforms, but the pool does have an island to pick apart.
Belmont’s listed fish include carp, common carp, mirror carp, tench, perch, pike, roach, rudd and eel. Carp reach double figures, while tench have been caught to around 6 lb. That gives Belmont a nicely varied coarse-fishing angle, with a different stock list from Brookmeadow and an island feature in the mix.
Both waters are strictly daytime venues. Brookmeadow runs from sunrise and must be cleared by 8pm, while Belmont is sunrise to sunset only. Night fishing is banned at both. No more than two rods are allowed, fish must be returned safely, and spinning is not permitted.
The 2026 full Trout & Coarse membership is £65, with registered-disabled membership at £45 and junior membership for anglers aged over 14 at £20. Full senior-citizen membership is £45 but isn’t available to new applicants. Check association notices before travelling, as fishing can change with heat, low water, maintenance, matches or other closures.

Hereford Angling Club Lakes and Pools FAQs
Do ordinary day tickets cover these waters?
No. Both pools are members-only waters, so ordinary day tickets do not cover them.
What are the fishing hours?
Brookmeadow starts at sunrise and must be cleared by 8pm. Belmont is sunrise to sunset only.
Are there toilets on site?
Brookmeadow has no toilet, and anglers are advised to bring a portable camping-style toilet if needed. Belmont has no on-site toilet; the nearest facilities are at the nearby Tesco superstore, which is not open 24 hours.
Can fishing be suspended or changed?
Yes. Availability can change because of heat, low water, maintenance, matches or other association closures. Keepnet use may also be suspended during hot weather or low-water conditions.
Where's the nearest tackle shop?
We haven't found a tackle shop on site at Hereford Angling Club Lakes and Pools. Sort your bait and end tackle before you travel, as there's no guarantee of anything close by near Hereford.
Do I need to bring food?
We haven't seen any food on site, so bring your own grub and drinks. A flask and a stove (where allowed) make a long day much better.
Is there parking, and how close is it to the swims?
Yes — brookmeadow parking. Walks to the further pegs can be a trek, so a barrow helps.
What's the postcode for the sat nav?
HR2 8NG.
How much is a ticket?
2026 full Trout & Coarse membership: £65; 2026 registered-disabled membership: £45; 2026 full senior-citizen Trout & Coarse membership: £45; not available to new applicants; 2026 junior membership for anglers aged over 14: £20. Prices last checked 2026-10-10 — they can change, so check before you go.

Are bait boats allowed?
We haven't seen a bait-boat rule listed. The fishery doesn't say on what we've checked, so give them a quick call before you set off.
Do I need barbless hooks?
Most UK fisheries prefer barbless or micro-barbed hooks — ask on arrival if unsure.
Do I need my own unhooking mat or cradle?
Bring one either way — most fisheries expect it and the fish deserve it.
Is it suitable for disabled anglers?
The fishery lists two disabled-friendly brookmeadow pegs. Ring ahead to check which swims suit you.
Do I need a rod licence?
Yes — anyone 13 or over fishing in England and Wales needs an Environment Agency rod licence (or Natural Resources Wales in Wales), on top of your fishery ticket.
When's the best time of year to fish here?
Late spring through autumn is prime for most species. Check our live weather edge for this venue before you go — it updates daily.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Brookmeadow/Pencoyd Pool
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
Venue rule: Leadcore is banned here, so run it on a mono or tubing leader with the top bead set to release — never fixed.
tench
Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
bream
Groundbait feeder at range for bream
Bream shoal up and graze over open, silty areas. A steady stream of groundbait in one spot keeps a shoal in front of you.
- Clip up and hit the same spot every cast.
- Start with 8–10 feeders quickly, then recast every 5 minutes.
- Worm, maggot or corn on a size 14–16.

How we'd fish Belmont Pool
carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.
