We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is one of the classic middle-Wye salmon fisheries, with a proper secluded feel despite being within easy reach of Ross-on-Wye and Hereford.
  • The beat runs for approximately 1½ miles, all on the right bank. That’s a fair old bit of river to explore, especially if you like moving around and finding the right water.
  • Croys along the bank give access to most of the salmon pools, so you’re not boxed out of the main opportunities. Handy stuff when you’re working through a beat.
  • Wading is relatively easy where required, giving you another option when the bank angle or flow calls for it. Take care around changing conditions, as ever.
  • You can drive along the bank for almost the entire beat, which makes shifting between pools much less of a faff. Parking arrangements themselves aren’t specified.
  • The fishery provides salmon and coarse fishing. Named coarse species are barbel, chub and pike, so there’s scope for both proper river craft and predator work.
  • For coarse anglers, the Wye’s running water lends itself to working likely swims carefully rather than charging about. Look for the crease, steadier edges and anything giving a bit of cover.
  • Salmon anglers have the full beat to investigate, with croys opening up access to the pools. Early starts and evening sessions look especially sensible when the riverbank is busy.
  • An abstraction pump may occasionally be operating on the beat, so keep an eye on what’s happening in the water and around the bank.
  • It can get busy with other river users during school holidays, bank holidays and summer weekends. The official steer is bob on: consider early-morning or evening fishing at those times.

Methods: Salmon anglers can work through the pools, using the croys to reach the water, while coarse anglers can target the named barbel, chub and pike swims. Wading is relatively easy where needed, and evening fishing is available from 5pm.
