Courtfield Fishery
Courtfield is a cracking Lower Wye beat between Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth, with just under three-quarters of a mile on the left bank. It’s booked through the Wye & Usk Foundation Fishing Passport and offers a proper mix of coarse water, old salmon cribs and fishy-looking features.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a decent-length stretch, running for just under three-quarters of a mile, so there’s plenty of water to explore rather than everyone piling into the same few swims.
- The beat sits opposite the Home Fishery, which shares the same water. Fishing access runs upstream of the waterworks, with faster water marking the upper limit.
- There are numerous old salmon cribs through the beat. They’re the sort of features worth giving a careful look, with the flow and cover likely to concentrate fish.
- Down at the lower end, the run towards an island adds another useful bit of character. Keep an eye on the crease and any changes in pace.
- The bankside lodge area is described as a productive bottle-neck. That sounds like a prime spot when the fish are on the munch.
- Wading is useful in parts of the beat, giving you a chance to reach water that may be awkward from the bank. Take care around the faster upper water.
- It’s marketed as coarse fishing water, with barbel and chub named for the stretch. Double-figure barbel are reported in autumn, which is a proper draw.
- Large pike are present near the waterworks, and the beat is said to hold good heads of several species at the right times.
- The water can remain fishable in winter when some other beats are less suitable. Summer canoe traffic can be heavy at certain times of day, so plan around that if you can.
Methods: Barbel and chub make this a natural trotting and feeder sort of venue, with the old cribs, bottle-neck and island run all worth working carefully. Keep a pike approach in mind near the waterworks, where larger fish are present.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
