Lower Carrots & Luggsmouth
Lower Carrots & Luggsmouth is a cracking double-bank beat on the Middle Wye, a few miles downstream of Hereford. It’s roughly 800 yards of Hutton’s water, offering both salmon and coarse fishing through the Wye & Usk Foundation Fishing Passport.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is one of the famous Middle Wye salmon fisheries, but it’s not a private little hideaway — a small salmon syndicate fishes the beat occasionally, so exclusivity isn’t guaranteed.
- There’s around 800 yards to explore, with both banks available. The banks are open and gently sloping, with a level walkway running along much of the beat. Bob on for getting about.
- Salmon anglers should be thinking about the usual April, May and June window, plus late September. The recommended height is roughly 1 foot 6 inches to 2 feet on the gauge opposite the hut.
- The water carries both salmon and coarse fishing. The coarse names from the holder are barbel, chub and pike — a proper mixed bag of Wye sport.
- Coarse anglers are advised to travel light. There’s no vehicle access to the bank, and it’s about a 300-metre walk from the parking area, so don’t bring the whole tackle shop.
- Parking is in a field through a gate from a busy road, with some hard standing available. Rejoining the road has poor visibility, so take extreme care. No faffing about here.
- For coarse fishing, the open banks and gently sloping access should make trotting or feeder work practical, depending on the flow and depth on the day. Look for the crease and any steady glide.
- If a salmon angler needs to fish downstream through your swim, coarse anglers must temporarily give way. Keep things friendly and move on when asked.
- There are a maximum of two salmon tickets available per day, and a ghillie may be available through the fishery contact. Bookings still need the owner’s approval before they’re accepted.
- Dogs aren’t allowed, professional guides can’t operate on the water, and the beat runs a wash-off policy. Catch and release applies to all species.
Methods: For coarse fishing, keep it mobile and travel light, with trotting or feeder approaches suited to the day’s flow. Salmon anglers should watch the gauge opposite the hut and target the usual April, May, June and late-September window.
