We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is proper natural Wye fishing, with a rural feel and plenty of greenery around the bank. A nice spot for a quiet day with the river doing the talking.
- The fishery is on the left bank, running near Holme Lacy Bridge and the village itself. Access is listed at Fiddlers Green on the B4224, postcode HR1 4LP.
- Overhanging willow trees line the bank, so expect plenty of cover and some classic crease and shade water to explore. Mind the branches when swinging a float through.
- Large shoals of chub are specifically mentioned for the stretch. That makes them the obvious target, especially when they’re grouped up and on the munch.
- The Wye here also holds grayling, salmon, trout, barbel, roach, pike, bleak and dace. A proper mixed fishery, then, with scope for more than one approach.
- Trotting is the natural starting point on a river like this, especially where the flow gives you a clean run. Keep the bait moving and work the edges of the pace.
- A light feeder approach should suit deeper or steadier water, while the willow cover is worth a careful look for chub sitting tight to shade and structure.
- The setting is described as idyllic, so this looks well suited to anglers after a scenic day rather than a built-up or heavily managed fishery. Keep things tidy around the bank.
- The stretch is available by day ticket through the Wye & Usk Foundation Fishing Passport booking system. No peg count, night-fishing policy or separate parking postcode is listed.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Try trotting the steadier runs for chub, dace and bleak, then switch to a light feeder where the river carries more depth. Willow-lined cover is well worth a careful flick for chub.
