We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- Fishing is from the right bank only, with roughly 765 yards of water to explore. The waterside access is described as good, so there’s plenty of beat to get stuck into.
- The main flow is slow and gentle, making this a tidy-looking stretch for a float or feeder approach. Keep an eye on the crease where the glide starts to pick up.
- Big carp sit in the margins and may need stalking rather than chucking blind. Some carp at the end of Huntsmans Pool are reported to reach well into double figures.
- Shoals of perch and chub run through much of the gentle glide. It sounds like a proper all-rounder, with plenty of water to fish methodically rather than rushing from peg to peg.
- Willow and alder trees create deeper water, so don’t ignore the shade. These tree-lined areas look made for a careful, quiet approach, especially when the river is clear.
- The river narrows into Hopyard Pool. Its deep tail is suited to barbel and chub, with the best option depending on the river level.
- Huntsmans Pool gives you around 200 yards of faster water. When it’s low and clear, this section is described as suitable for chub and barbel.
- There’s an approximately 330-metre walk from the parking spot to the downstream limit, so travel light and keep the faff down. Maximum availability is two tickets per day.
- The Wye & Usk Foundation advises against coarse fishing above 25.0°C water temperature. All fishing is catch and release, and an online catch return must be completed afterwards.
Methods: Trotting the gentle glides, working a feeder into the deeper tree-lined water, or stalking the margins for carp all fit the character of the beat. For barbel and chub, focus on the deep tail of Hopyard Pool and the faster Huntsmans Pool when conditions are right.
