The full rundown on Isle of Wight Gunville Pond

Gunville Lake is the official name used by the Isle of Wight Freshwater Angling Company, although plenty of anglers know it as Gunville Pond. It sits on the west side of Gunville Road, between Newport and Carisbrooke. Handy spot if you’re fishing the island and want a venue with a proper mix of species.

The fishery lake is about 2.5 acres, within a wider site of roughly 4.5 acres. It’s a fairly deep pond too, running to around 15–18 feet. There are approximately 30 fishable swims, all designated, so you’ll need to fish from the peg you’re allocated rather than wandering off to nick a quiet corner.

Carp are the main draw, with IOWFAC listing fish to 35 lb. That’s enough to get the big-fish gear out, but Gunville isn’t carp-only. Tench to around 6–7 lb, pike over 20 lb, roach to roughly 2 lb and bream to about 5–7 lb are listed too. Older descriptions also mention rudd, perch and eel.

The depth and mixed stock give you a few ways to attack it. Carp anglers can look at the margins and any obvious features, while float or feeder approaches should keep the smaller species and tench in play. As ever on a deeper lake, finding the fish and keeping things tidy matters more than chucking halfway across the pond.

Night fishing is permitted, and bivvies can be used in designated fishing bays only. Bait boats are allowed, provided they’re used responsibly. Up to three rods are permitted per member or authorised guest, but every rod must be attended. No leaving the swim for a wander while the alarms are doing the work.

This is a rules-led syndicate venue. You’ll need a 42-inch landing net, suitable unhooking mat and weighing sling, with micro-barbed or barbless hooks only. Braided mainlines are banned, though braided hook lengths are allowed. Pike and lure fishing is restricted to 1 October to 31 March, and live bait is prohibited.

Membership is in high demand, with vacancies filled from a waiting list. Guest tickets need an existing member present and should be requested by email at least 48 hours ahead. There’s no published current Gunville-specific day-ticket price, and the official site handles membership and guest arrangements by email rather than an online checkout.
