The full rundown on Larkfield Lakes
The Larkfield Complex sits near Leybourne Lakes Country Park, close to Larkfield and West Malling in Kent. It’s operated by SWS Fisheries and is only a few minutes from M20 Junction 4, so access is pretty handy if you’re coming across the county.
This isn’t a quick walk-in day-ticket job. The complex appears to run as a membership or syndicate venue, with new members needing a referral from an existing member or a charter reference from another club or syndicate. If you fancy a go, the official waiting list is the route in. Bit more faff than chucking a tenner over a kiosk, but that’s syndicate fishing for you.
There are four named waters: Larky 2, The Railway, The Ocean, and Road & Island. Between them, the complex offers smaller and larger gravel-pit options, serious depths, weed, gravel bars, underwater woodland and some proper target fish. The headline is specimen carp, but the tench and predator angle looks well worth a look too.
Larky 2 covers about 18 acres and holds around 200 carp, including fish over 53lb. The Railway is roughly 10 acres, drops to about 30 feet and has gravel bars plus substantial summer weed beds. With around 90 carp after recent stocking, it looks like a water where feature-finding and careful presentation could really pay off.
The Ocean is the big one at approximately 45 acres. It’s a deep gravel pit, reaching around 30 feet, and is shared with the public and a watersports centre. That gives it a different feel from a quiet syndicate lake, but it also brings tench and pike possibilities. Up to four rods are permitted, and rowing boats are allowed.
Road & Island covers about 35 acres and has underwater woodland, with carp recorded over 40lb. It’s split between industrial-side and country-park-side sections, while the housing-bank far margin is out of bounds. Bait boats and rowing boats are permitted, and up to four rods are allowed when fish safety comes first. The wider SWS operation also describes pike catches into the 20lb range, while the complex’s tench record is reported as over 14lb.
We're not sure on ticket prices here — we couldn't find reliable, up-to-date prices online, so give the fishery a ring or check their own site before you go.

For a syndicate angler, the size looks manageable enough to learn, while the reported stock gives it a proper target-fish feel. Keep things tidy, watch the margins and don’t overlook quieter water when the carp are mooching.

The Railway is around 10 acres but reaches depths of about 30 feet. It also has gravel bars and substantial summer weed beds, giving anglers plenty to work out as the season changes.
With approximately 90 carp after recent stocking, this looks like a water where accuracy should matter. Gravel bars are obvious targets, but the weed and depth mean the carp may not always be parked where you expect.

How we'd fish The Railway
carp
Solid PVA bag over the snaggy bits
With the bars and a busy bottom, a solid bag keeps the hook point masked on the drop and sat neatly in a little pile of bait however rough the lakebed is.
- Tie a short, stiff hooklink (4–6in) so it packs into the bag without kinking.
- Fill the bag with a damp crumb mix and pack it tight — loose bags spill on the cast.
- Nick a wafter or small pop-up on the hair so it settles over the mix, not under it.
- Cast a few yards short of the feature, recast every couple of hours with a fresh bag.

Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.

A bigger bed of bait at range
On a big lake with gravel bars, a good bed of bait on or behind a bar gives roaming fish a reason to stop and feed for longer.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.

Lift method float for tench
Tench feed with their heads down and tip baits up — the lift method shows that bite as the float rising and lying flat.
- Fish the margin at dawn with a straight waggler, locked by a single big shot 2–3in from the hook.
- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.

- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.

How we'd fish Road & Island
carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.

Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.

- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
pike
Static deadbaits for the pike
A smelly deadbait on the bottom near drop-offs or reed lines is the classic, reliable way to find a lake's pike, especially in the colder months.
- Sardine, smelt or mackerel on a wire trace with semi-barbless trebles.
- Strike early — never let a pike run off with the bait.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.

- Rake or lightly bait the swim with hemp, corn and maggot.
- Strike when the float lifts or lies flat. Bread, corn or worm on a size 12–14.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.
Road & Island
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
Good background reading. Most of it is a few years old, so treat it as a starting point and ask on the day.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “The Larkfield Complex is a proper Kent syndicate venue near Larkfield and West Malling, with four very different waters covering carp, tench and predator fishing. It’s membership-only in practice, with joining handled through referrals, charter references and the official waiting list.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
