Lancaster Canal – Preston Stretch

A proper linear canal venue running from Preston north to Bridge 118 at Hest Bank, with the Glasson Branch included too. Roach, perch, bream, tench, carp and pike give it a decent spread of canal targets, but you’ll need the right permit sorted before you drop in.

“7.1/10 — A long canal venue with a broad mix of coarse species and pike.”

The lowdown

Lancaster Canal – Preston Stretch is a proper long-haul canal fishery, not a neat little lake complex with numbered pegs and a café round the corner. The Pike Anglers Club of Great Britain controls the canal from its southern end at Preston, running north to Bridge 118 at Hatlex Bridge, Hest Bank. The Glasson Branch is included too, so there’s a fair bit of water to get your head around.

The full rundown on Lancaster Canal – Preston Stretch

Lancaster Canal – Preston Stretch is a proper long-haul canal fishery, not a neat little lake complex with numbered pegs and a café round the corner. The Pike Anglers Club of Great Britain controls the canal from its southern end at Preston, running north to Bridge 118 at Hatlex Bridge, Hest Bank. The Glasson Branch is included too, so there’s a fair bit of water to get your head around.

The navigable Lancaster Canal from Preston to Tewitfield is about 42 miles long, which gives you plenty of scope for a quiet wander and a bit of searching. Reported fish include roach, perch, bream, tench, carp, pike and eel. That’s a cracking mix, whether you fancy a float, feeder, margin fishing or a proper predator session when the conditions line up.

On a new canal, don’t overcomplicate things. Have a good look before settling in. Check the towpath-side features, visible cover, changes in depth and any bits of the margin that look fishy. A couple of rigs, spare hooklengths, plumbing gear and enough bait to change approach can save a load of faff. Fish can be close in, so it’s worth keeping the near margin in the plan rather than automatically clipping up across the cut.

The Preston end is near Ashton Basin, with PR2 2DB listed as an access postcode. Fishing is permitted from the towpath side only, and boatyards and marinas are out of bounds. Parking is generally from nearby roads, bridges and lanes, so park carefully and leave access clear. There are no dedicated on-site toilets reported for the towpath fishery, so plan your day before you head off and bring the usual bank essentials.

Pike anglers need to be bang on with the rules. A minimum 30-pound wire trace is required, with an 18-inch trace for deadbaiting, and an unhooking mat is required for pike and perch. Live and dead bait are allowed from 1 October to 14 March only. Pike fishing is prohibited when the water temperature reaches 18°C or higher. Pack proper unhooking kit, keep rods attended and be ready to stop if conditions aren’t suitable.

Get your ticket sorted before travelling. Day tickets and memberships are bought in advance through the PAC Clubmate platform and aren’t sold on the bank. The £5 online day ticket covers up to two rods and is valid for the date of issue only. Day fishing runs from dawn until dusk, while night fishing is restricted to PAC members who also hold a Lancaster Canal fishery permit. An Environment Agency rod licence is also required, and all fish must be returned to the water.
