We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a natural Ribble fishery with pools, riffles and riverbank access around Ribblesdale Pool.
  • You’re fishing the south bank, with the water forming part of a bigger council-controlled stretch through Clitheroe.
  • The named fish are trout, sea trout, salmon, chub, grayling and roach. A cracking mix, with plenty to keep the day interesting.
  • The council allows any method, subject to the applicable rules. So the approach can be tailored to the conditions and the swim.
  • Pools and riffles give the river a bit of variety. Look for the crease, steadier edges and the softer water around the main push of flow.
  • Trotting, feeder work or other permitted approaches can all come into play, depending on river height and what the fish fancy.
  • Daylight-only fishing keeps things straightforward. There’s no night fishing on this stretch, so plan around the available light.
  • Junior anglers need to take extra care with the rules. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and under-11s must be with a parent or responsible adult at all times.
  • There’s easy parking in the area, and the council lists two disabled-access fishing areas elsewhere among its Clitheroe stretches.
  • Keep the permit with you, follow the bailiff’s requirements and watch the river conditions. Junior fishing is prohibited when the river is in flood.

Methods: Any method is allowed, subject to the applicable rules. The pools, riffles and varying flow suit adapting your approach to the swim and conditions.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
