The full rundown on Wyreside Lakes Fishery
Wyreside Lakes sits at Sunnyside Farmhouse, Gleaves Hill Road, Dolphinholme, Lancaster, Lancashire, LA2 9DG. It’s near Galgate, although Dolphinholme is the official address. The estate covers more than 120 acres and has six fishing lakes, so there’s plenty of water to get your head around.
For carp anglers, the headline waters are Wyre Lake, Sunnyside Two and Foxes Lake. Wyre is the biggest at 18 acres, with a 1-acre island and 19 swims. Its stated stock includes about 180 carp, with more than 100 over 20lb and more than 20 over 30lb. That’s some seriously chunky potential.
Sunnyside Two covers 10 acres and has a small island plus 20 pegs. The lake is stated to hold more than 250 carp, including about 80 over 20lb and six over 30lb. Foxes is a more compact 4-acre lake with 13 gravelled swims, more than 250 carp, over 80 fish above 20lb and nine above 30lb. It also contains catfish to 61lb. Proper lumps, then.
River Lake is the different beast. It’s described as 1 acre on the current lake page, while an older coarse-fishing page says 1.5 acres, and it has 16 pegs. It’s a mixed-coarse runs water with carp, F1s, tench, bream, roach, chub, perch and ide. A decent-looking option if you fancy keeping the float busy rather than sitting behind alarms.
Access varies by lake and ticket. Carp day tickets on Sunnyside One, Sunnyside Two or Foxes start at £10 for one rod, while River Lake day access runs from 7am to 7pm and starts at £10 for one rod. River Lake tickets are first-come, first-served and cannot be prebooked online. Weekend day-ticket angling is generally not booked online, so calling to check availability is the bob-on move.
Pike anglers get seasonal access to Wyre, Bantons, Sunnyside One and Sunnyside Two from 1 October to 31 March. Admission times change through the year, and nobody is admitted after dark, although overnight bookings are available on applicable waters. There are toilet and shower blocks, an onsite shop, launderette, tackle shop and food delivery for users, so longer sessions have useful backup.
The rules are worth reading before you clip up. Barbed hooks are required on carp waters, while barbless hooks are allowed for coarse angling on the designated coarse water under its rules. Whole nuts and outside pellets are banned, fish must not be moved between lakes, and camping units cannot be pitched beside the waters. A separate campsite is provided.

How we'd fish Wyre Lake
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
carp
Light baiting tight to the island margins
Carp patrol the island margins on most venues. A handful of bait right on the edge often beats a heavy bed in open water, especially later in the day.
- Walk the bank first and look for bubbling, swirls or coloured water by the cover.
- Bait two or three spots with a few handfuls of chopped and whole boilies.
- Lower or flick the rig in quietly and back your line off with a back lead.
- Keep the drag set tight-ish — fish hooked by cover need turning quickly.
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On wide, open water the fish move about a lot — a decent bed of bait at range holds a passing group long enough to get a bite.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
pike
Static deadbaits for the pike
A smelly deadbait on the bottom near drop-offs or reed lines is the classic, reliable way to find a lake's pike, especially in the colder months.
- Sardine, smelt or mackerel on a wire trace with semi-barbless trebles.
- Strike early — never let a pike run off with the bait.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.

How we'd fish Foxes Lake
carp
A bigger bed of bait at range
On a big lake with gravel bars, a good bed of bait on or behind a bar gives roaming fish a reason to stop and feed for longer.
- Find a clean, hard spot with a marker float and clip up so every cast lands on it.
- Spread the bait with a spod or throwing stick — little and often.
- Mix boilies, pellet and particles so there's always something left for the fish to graze.
- Match the hookbait to the freebies.
catfish
Big hookbaits after dark for the cats
Catfish come out at night and like strong smells. A big halibut pellet or fish-based bait over a small bed of pellet is the usual approach.
- Fish strong — 20lb+ line and a big strong hook.
- Use an unhooking mat and a big net; cats are long and heavy.
- Check the venue's rules on cat tackle before you set up.

How we'd fish River Lake
carp
A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait
When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.
- Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
- Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
tench
Method or maggot feeder for tench
Tench love margins and weedy patches. A feeder puts a small, tight patch of bait right by the hookbait.
- Fish 10–20 yards out, or tight to the cover where it's safe to land fish.
- Recast every 10–15 minutes early on to build the swim.
- Short hooklink with a dead red maggot, corn or a 8mm wafter.
bream
Waggler and groundbait for bream
If they're within waggler range, float fishing over balls of groundbait is a great way to pick off bream.
- Ball in groundbait with casters and chopped worm at the start.
- Set the float a touch over-depth and watch for slow lifts.
- Top up when bites slow.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.

How we'd fish Sunnyside One
- Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.
- Have a long forceps, unhooking mat and big net ready before you cast.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.

Tips & guides worth reading
How we'd fish each lake
Our own suggestions, worked out from each lake's features, its main fish and the venue rules. They're tried-and-tested methods, not reports from this venue, so watch the water and ask in the tackle shop on the day.
Wyre Lake

- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.
Foxes Lake

When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.

Our take on the feedback
Our read
Checked Sept '26 — “Wyreside Lakes is a big Lancashire complex near Galgate, with six lakes covering carp, mixed coarse fish, pike and catfish. There’s proper choice here, from runs-water action on River Lake to chunky carp and catfish on the larger day-ticket waters.”
This is our own summary of recurring public feedback and the venue details we checked, not a copied customer review or a promise you’ll catch. Feedback changes, so we keep it separate from the Tackle Index score.
