We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is the diverted channel of the River Welland around Spalding, built after the 1947 floods and opened in 1953. So, proper useful flood-defence water rather than a tiny backwater.
  • The channel protects Spalding and the surrounding countryside, with the fishery wrapped in the area’s agricultural and flood-defence landscape.
  • It’s broad and engineered, giving the place a different feel from a natural, wandering river. A handy option when you fancy a proper Fenland session.
  • The water offers general coarse angling, with bream and tench specifically mentioned, plus carp in the channel. Plenty there for a relaxed day with the gear kept sensible.
  • Access points are available at regular intervals, which should make finding a swim less of a faff. Exact peg numbers aren’t given, though.
  • The venue has been described as historic but off the radar for several years. That gives it a bit of cheeky hidden-gem appeal for anglers wanting something away from the obvious circuit.
  • Day tickets are available, and junior anglers fish free. A current Environment Agency rod licence is also needed, so get that sorted before setting off.
  • Night fishing is permitted on the Coronation Channel. You need to buy a day ticket for each day of night fishing, so don’t assume one ticket covers a longer stay.
  • Keepnets must be fish-friendly, at least 3 metres long and secured correctly. No live freshwater fish as bait; only pre-packed, shop-bought dead bait is allowed.
  • Camping, fires, barbecues and excess alcohol are banned. Take your litter home, respect other bank users, and keep dogs under control with waste removed.

Methods: It’s a general coarse-fishing venue, with bream, tench and carp available. The checked details don’t set out specific tactics, so keep the approach suited to the conditions and the fish in front of you.
