Abergavenny Town Water

A cracking bit of River Usk around Abergavenny, running for just over a mile downstream of Merthyr Road bridge. It’s mostly double-bank club water, with salmon pools, runs, glides and plenty of gravel underfoot.

Run by Merthyr Angling Association, Gwent Angling Society and ISCA Angling Club (jointly) · checked 12 Oct 2026

River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

The lowdown

  • The beat is run jointly by Merthyr Angling Association, Gwent Angling Society and ISCA Angling Club, so it’s proper club water rather than a private syndicate-only stretch.
  • Fishing is mostly available on both banks, and the beat has a varied mix of deep pools, steady runs, pocket water and lively riffles.
  • The riverbed is mainly gravel, making wading relatively easy. Still, take care around the deeper pools and quicker bits — the Usk can push on.
  • There’s enough variety to keep you moving. Work the crease, cover the heads of pools, then pick apart the glides and pocket water.
  • Brown trout are a key target, with the wider Abergavenny stretch noted for good-sized wild fish. Fly fishing is the only permitted method for trout.
  • Salmon are more likely later in the season. Where national byelaws allow, you can fish for them with fly or spinning.
  • Sea trout, chub and dace are also reported from the Abergavenny Town stretch, adding a few cheeky possibilities to the mix.
  • The daily ticket limit is six, so there’s a cap on pressure. Club water means exclusivity isn’t guaranteed, though — don’t expect the whole mile to yourself.
  • Nearby access and parking are associated with Llanfoist Bridge, Castle Meadows and Abergavenny town. Dogs are allowed, but they need to stay under control.
  • Everything is catch-and-release, with a wash-off policy in operation. No bait fishing, and professional guides aren’t permitted on the water.

Methods: For trout, stick to the fly and work the pools, runs, glides and riffles to suit the water. Salmon can be targeted with fly or spinning when the byelaws allow, with the later season generally more promising.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
