Glamorgan Anglers (above Monmouth Town Bridge)

A cracking, members-only stretch of the River Wye at Monmouth, running for roughly a mile upstream from the Rowing Club towards Hadnock Road and Mally Brook. It’s double-bank club water, with barbel, chub and autumn/winter pike all part of the appeal.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper Wye fishing, with the stretch sitting above Monmouth Town Bridge and covering about a mile of river.
  • Glamorgan Anglers Club Ltd controls the water, and both banks are included. Handy, as it gives members plenty of river to explore.
  • The club has been establishing and maintaining swims and access paths, so there’s clearly been work put into making the bank fishing more user-friendly.
  • Don’t take the depth lightly. The club warns it can be unknown and may be 6 to 10 feet, or more, immediately in front of the bank. That’s a serious bit of water.
  • Barbel and chub are reported to be fishing well. Look for steady glides, crease lines and depth where the flow gives fish a bit of cover and food coming through.
  • Trotting, feeder work and sensible legering should all come into play, depending on colour and pace. A bit of extra water can really get the river on the munch.
  • Pike feature in autumn and winter, while the Monmouth page also names dace, perch, roach, bleak, gudgeon and eels. Plenty to keep things interesting.
  • Fishing is from the bank. Wading is at your own risk, and with those depths right under the bank, there’s no need to faff about getting in unless conditions are properly suitable.
  • The coarse river season runs from 16 June to 14 March inclusive. Fly fishing for grayling and brown trout is allowed during the coarse closed season on a coarse permit, with immediate release required.

Methods: A versatile bank-fishing stretch for trotting, feeder and leger approaches, with barbel and chub the main coarse targets. Pike fishing comes into its own through autumn and winter, while fly fishing for grayling and brown trout is allowed in the stated closed-season circumstances.

Key rules

  • All anglers must hold a valid Natural Resources Wales rod licence.
  • Fishing is from the bank; wading in rivers is at the angler’s own risk.
  • The coarse river season runs from 16 June to 14 March inclusive.
  • The River Wye game-fishing season is stated as 3 March to 30 September inclusive.
  • Fly fishing for grayling and brown trout during the river closed season is permitted on a coarse permit, with immediate release required.
  • Members must stay within club-water boundaries and must not trespass.
  • Boats are banned on club waters except for authorised work.
  • Baited or hooked tackle must not be left unattended.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
