River Wye at Wyesham
Wyesham is a considerable-length, properly scenic lower-Wye stretch run by Caerphilly & District Angling Association. It’s members-only coarse fishing, with big barbel in the mix and pike water that the association reckons is still relatively unexplored.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The setting is a real cracker, with unspoilt countryside around one of the most scenic stretches in the lower reaches of the Wye.
- There’s no fixed length or peg count given, but the association describes the Wyesham water as considerable in length. So there should be plenty of river to spread out on.
- Barbel are the headline act. The association mentions large numbers, including fish over 10 lb. Proper target-fish stuff.
- Pike are present too, and the stretch is described as relatively unexplored for them. Worth keeping that in mind when planning a visit.
- You’ve got scope for both float fishing and feeder fishing. Pick apart the flow, work the crease and look for steady glides or deeper-looking water.
- It’s coarse fishing only, with all coarse fish returned. Salmon must not be targeted, while salmon and kelts must also go straight back.
- The fishing season is 18 October to 2 March, although the landlord may change those dates. Don’t just assume the dates are fixed.
- Access is through the field gate beside the A466 when travelling from Monmouth towards Redbrook. Shut the gate properly afterwards — livestock are present.
- Silver Membership is sunrise-to-sunset only, so this is not a night-fishing venue. No specific parking area or postcode is published, so expect a bit of faff around arrival.
- The water is members-only on the checked details. There’s no stated day-ticket option for Wyesham, so a Silver Membership is the bob-on route for eligible anglers.
Methods: Float fishing and feeder fishing are both specifically suited to the water. For barbel, concentrate on the crease and steadier depth; pike are also present, but the association describes that side of the stretch as relatively unexplored.

Key rules
- Coarse fishing only.
- The official season is 18 October to 2 March, subject to possible change by the landlord.
- No shrimp, prawn, worm or spinner may be used.
- Maggot is prohibited when the Coleman’s gauge records a river level of 2 feet or below.
- All coarse fish must be returned.
- Kelts and salmon must be returned; salmon must not be targeted.
- Anglers must carry the appropriate Environment Agency licence.
- Close field gates because livestock are present, and leave no litter or discarded line on the fishery or adjoining land.
Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
