The lowdown
The Derwent stretch sits in the Vale of Hackness, North Yorkshire, running from Waters Meet — where the Derwent joins Low North Beck — through Langdale, Troutsdale, Holmeswood, Hackness, Everley Bottoms and Forge Valley.
Its character changes nicely along the way: open pasture and easier access give way to wooded, secluded and more technical water. Pools, runs, glides, riffles and slow glides all feature, with the final run down to East Ayton Weir taking in the narrower Forge Valley water.

A cracking club-controlled River Derwent stretch from Waters Meet down to East Ayton Weir, running through the Vale of Hackness. It’s mainly fly water, with wild trout, stocked trout and plenty of grayling water to get stuck into.

A cracking four-mile run of the River Derwent from Stamford Bridge through Scoreby to Kexby, controlled by YDAA. It’s a day-ticket stretch with a mix of fast shallows, deeper water and plenty of seasonal variation.

A proper picturesque bit of the River Derwent, with YDAA water both upstream and downstream of Howsham Bridge. It’s members-only, fast and shallow in character, but with deeper 8–10ft water in places and a cheeky chance of a big, elusive barbel.

A cracking members-only Derwent stretch near Kirkham Abbey, running from Kirkham road bridge downstream towards Howsham Hall. It’s a proper mixed bit of river, with quick shallows, deeper glides and some lightly fished middle water.

A proper old-school Yorkshire Derwent stretch at Breighton and Gunby, run by Hull & District Anglers’ Association. It’s a relatively deep, slow-flowing section, mainly suited to roach and dace fishing, with the odd chub or pike putting in an appearance.

A cracking two-part bit of the Yorkshire Derwent, with H&DAA water above and below Elvington Bridge. Mostly deep and slow, but the lower section throws in shallows, weed beds and deeper holes to sniff out.

Tips & reports
Our take (editorial, not club advice): on any decent-sized river, a lead that holds bottom without dragging is half the battle — go up in weight before you go up in bait. A bit of extra colour after rain often brings barbel and bream closer in, but a fast-rising, debris-filled river is dangerous; if in doubt, don't. Weather tools built for still lakes don't translate neatly to rivers, so we haven't bolted a lake-style weather score on here.
