River Derwent at Breighton and Gunby

A proper old-school Yorkshire Derwent stretch at Breighton and Gunby, run by Hull & District Anglers’ Association. It’s a relatively deep, slow-flowing section, mainly suited to roach and dace fishing, with the odd chub or pike putting in an appearance.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is around three-quarters of a mile of natural river, running from the old bridge downstream to the fence.
  • You’re fishing the east bank, which is the left bank when looking downstream. Handy one to get straight in your head before setting off.
  • The water is described as relatively deep and slow-flowing, so it should suit a float fishing approach when conditions are kind.
  • Roach and dace are the main event here. Think steady trotting and working the pace rather than charging about looking for monster fish.
  • There’s always the chance of a cheeky chub turning up, with occasional pike also noted on the stretch.
  • Access is at Gunby, using the path through the wood on the old railway track. A bit of a walk, but that’s part of the charm of this sort of river fishing.
  • The downstream boundary is just upstream of the Breighton launch public house. Keep an eye on the boundaries and don’t wander past the fence.
  • This isn’t a purpose-built platform fishery. It’s proper natural riverbank fishing, so expect swims and features to feel more rustic.
  • Fishing runs from 5:00am to 10:00pm. Standard membership doesn’t include night fishing, so pack up before the late shift.
  • No on-site toilets, dedicated parking postcode or fishing platforms are listed. Worth sorting your travel plans before you head off, rather than having a faff at the gate.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Float fishing and trotting look the natural starting points on this deep, steady water, with a feeder worth considering when you need to search the swim. Keep it tidy and fish the crease, glides and steadier pockets for roach and dace.
