We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Catterick Bridge on Live River Levels

The lowdown
- The stretch starts at the Bailey Bridge at Brompton-on-Swale, then winds downstream for roughly 2.8 km. That is about 1.7 miles of river to explore.
- RADAS describes it as excellent fly-fishing water, and the layout backs that up. There are long glides, lively riffles, deep pools and pocket water.
- The long glides should give fly anglers room to work, while the riffles and pocket water offer more broken flow and plenty of bits to pick apart.
- For a change of pace, the deeper pools are the places to look at when the river is pushing through or the fish have dropped back into steadier water.
- It is a mixed fly-and-coarse stretch, so you are not tied to one approach. Keep an eye on the flow and switch things up rather than flogging the same swim all day.
- Named fish include trout, grayling, chub and possibly barbel. That is a tidy Swale line-up, with options across the faster, shallower water and the deeper pools.
- There are multiple access routes, although RADAS says further access details are to follow. Check the current club information before setting off, so there is no faff on arrival.
- The downstream limit is the start of MOD land opposite Red House Farm. Treat that boundary as the hard stop and stick to the stated stretch.
- This is club water only. There is no RADAS day permit for D’Arcy Hildyard Waters, and night fishing is not permitted.
- The surrounding village is Brompton-on-Swale, while the water forms part of RADAS’s wider River Swale holdings around Richmond.
Methods: Fly fishing suits the glides, riffles and pocket water, while coarse tactics can be adapted around the deeper pools and steadier parts of the flow. Keep things mobile and let the river features guide the approach.
