River Nene, Denford

Plan a session

Denford is a cracking, secluded River Nene stretch with dead-easy access to the swims. It runs from below Woodford Island, from the bridge down to the hedgeline below the big bend, and has a proper mixed coarse line-up.

River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

My River Watch isn't available here — we haven't matched a level gauge to this stretch, and we won't guess one.

The lowdown

  • This is a one-bank-only stretch, so stick to the bank shown on the Nene Anglers venue map. No wandering off-piste.
  • Access is through Grange Road, Woodford. The entrance is also used for Ranger World, so keep your eyes peeled for the gate on the left.
  • That gate leads along the track to parking by Woodford Lock. It’s padlocked, with the code available in the Nene Anglers Clubmate app.
  • Once through, park on the dirt track and grassed area beside the river near the bridge. Leave plenty of room for farmers and tractor access — don’t cause a proper faff.
  • The club describes Denford as secluded, with very easy access to the swims and safe parking. Bob on if you’re carrying a feeder kit or predator gear.
  • It’s mixed-species coarse fishing, with roach, bream, perch, tench, chub, pike and carp on the menu. The stretch has a track record for bream and predators.
  • The water begins below Woodford Island and follows the river from the bridge to the hedgeline boundary below the large bend. Expect varied river water rather than a one-note venue.
  • A feeder approach should suit the bream side of things, while sensible predator tackle is worth having when the pike are on the munch. Trotting is also a natural option for the smaller silverfish and chub.
  • Maximum two rods are allowed. Keep all fish in the water as much as possible, return them promptly and unharmed, and bring a suitable landing net — at least 30 inches for specimen or predator fishing.
  • Relock the gate when entering and leaving. No boats, inflatables or SUPs, no night fishing, and no camping, fires, barbecues or dogs. Leave the place tidy and keep the farmers happy.

Methods: A mixed approach looks bob on here: feeder work for the bream, with trotting or lighter float tactics for roach, perch and chub. Predator anglers should bring proper gear, a minimum 30-inch landing net and an unhooking mat.

Key rules

  • Fishing is from one bank only and only from the banks shown on the club’s venue maps.
  • A maximum of two rods is allowed.
  • Fishing from boats, inflatables, SUPs or any other watercraft is prohibited.
  • An Environment Agency rod licence is required. All fish must be returned promptly, alive and unharmed.
  • A suitable landing net is compulsory. A minimum 30-inch net is required for specimen and predator fishing. Gaffs and fish lip grippers are prohibited, and an unhooking mat must be used on the bank.
  • Barbel, pike and carp may not be retained in keepnets.
  • Fishing hours are 03:00-23:00 from June through September, and 04:00-21:00 from October through March. The club close season runs from March 15 through June 15 inclusive.
  • No camping, fires, barbecues or dogs. Relock the access gate after entering and leaving.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
