We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The beat sits on the South Tyne in Northumberland, around four miles west of Hexham. A handy spot if you fancy a proper Tyne outing without a huge faff.
  • It runs from the village of Fourstones to Fourstones Paper Mill. That gives you a clear start and finish, rather than a vague bit of river to hunt out.
  • Fishing is on the left bank only. The wider Warden operation has some double-bank fishing, but this particular beat is single-bank.
  • Fourstones is part of a wider estate-run operation covering four beats and about four miles of North and South Tyne water. The wider fishery averages roughly seven named pools per beat.
  • The holder advertises day-ticket fishing, with one rod permitted on the beat. Rods cannot be shared unless the fishery manager gives permission first.
  • Prices move through the season: £35 per day from February 1 to May 31, rising to £55, £65, £70 and £85 across the later date bands through October 31.
  • You’ll need to contact the fishery manager at least two days before arriving. Meet-and-greet can be arranged at the beat or at the Boatside Inn car park.
  • Parking is available along the access tracks shown on the holder’s beat map. Keep a permit with you, and leave a second copy clearly on the car dashboard.
  • The holder strongly advises carrying a wading stick, plus a lifejacket or buoyancy aid when boating or wading in strong or deep water. Dogs are welcome but must stay under close control.
  • Full details of every fish caught must be reported each day. Salmon, sea-trout and brown-trout seasons apply, so check the relevant dates before heading out.

Methods: The checked details don’t set out specific methods or named swims for Fourstones Beat. Pick your approach around the conditions on the day, and take the wading and buoyancy advice seriously.

Key rules

  • One rod is permitted per beat.
  • Rods may not be shared without prior permission from the fishery manager.
  • Contact the fishery manager at least two days before arrival.
  • Carry a fishing permit while fishing.
  • Leave a second copy of the permit on the car dashboard.
  • Report full details of any fish caught each day.
  • Dogs may accompany rods but must remain under close control.
  • The salmon close season is November 1 to January 31 inclusive; sea-trout close season is November 1 to April 2 inclusive; brown-trout and non-migratory-trout close season is October 1 to March 21 inclusive.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
