River Trent, Farndon

A cracking three-quarter-mile Trent stretch just upstream of Newark, with quicker stick-float water above and wider, slower swims below. It’s NAA members only, with some cheeky carp showing at the bottom end.

River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

The lowdown

  • This Farndon water runs for roughly three-quarters of a mile, from below the marina entrance downstream. Proper handy bit of Trent if you like a stretch that changes character as you walk it.
  • Upstream, the river is narrower and quicker. That’s the spot for a stick float, working the flow and keeping the bait moving nicely through the swim.
  • Downstream opens out and slows right down. Wider water here suits a waggler or feeder, especially when you’re looking to pick apart a bigger line.
  • The main access is from the public car park on Main Street in Farndon. It’s about 350 yards to the river via the marina bridge, so there’s a short walk and a bit of faff with the kit.
  • You can also reach the downstream end via the track off Long Lane. There’s a small car park at the bottom, which makes the lower section a bit more straightforward to reach.
  • NAA names roach, bream, chub, barbel and perch across its waters. Some carp are often caught at this stretch’s bottom end too, so don’t ignore the slower water.
  • The river is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. Outside that period, match your approach to the flow: float work up top, waggler or feeder down below.
  • Cars must not be taken upstream of the car park. Keep that in mind when planning a day, especially if you’re carrying a barrow, bait and a mountain of tackle.
  • Night fishing is allowed, but only with the proper Night Fishing Permit. It’s a seasonal permit, so sort it before settling in for a long one.

Methods: Trotting a stick float is the bob-on approach in the narrower, faster upper section. Downstream, switch to a waggler or feeder for the wider, slower water.

Key rules

  • Members only; day tickets are not available.
  • Night fishing requires a Night Fishing Permit.
  • The closed season runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive.
  • Cars must not be taken upstream of the car park.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
