The full rundown on Sonning Eye Pits

Sonning Eye Pit is a large gravel-pit lake near Sonning Eye in Oxfordshire, controlled by Reading & District Angling Association. It’s a syndicate-style venue, so this isn’t a turn-up-and-pay-at-the-gate sort of place. You’ll need the right RDAA permit, or to fish as a member’s guest.

The lake has islands and a peninsula dividing parts of the water, giving it plenty of shape to work with. The official site doesn’t publish the total acreage, so the overall size is best left at “large gravel pit” rather than guessing at the numbers.

Carp are the headline act, with a history of producing big fish and rumours of carp over 50 lb being caught in recent years. That’s proper lump territory, although the checked information doesn’t give a confirmed stock list or individual fish weights beyond those reports.

It isn’t just a carp water, either. Large shoals of bream are present, along with tench, pike, good-sized perch and large eels. The pike fishing is particularly popular in winter, while the bream shoals and tench give coarse anglers other options when the carp aren’t playing ball.

There’s year-round access, but the permitted hours depend on your permit. General-permit fishing is subject to RDAA access times, which change through the seasons from April 1, 2026. Night fishing is included with the North Permit and Platinum Permit, but not with the Bronze Permit at Sonning Eye Lake.

The North Permit is a 24-hour permit and includes Sonning Eye Lake and Whistley Mill Lake, while the Bronze Permit gives 24-hour access across RDAA venues with night fishing restricted to specified waters. A guest ticket is £10, dawn-to-dusk only, and the guest must stay within earshot of the accompanying member.

Three rods are allowed with the appropriate rod licence, and bait boats are permitted. There are useful level-access swims that can be reached by car, including top swims suitable for less-able-bodied anglers. Parking is available at ///simply.stroke.filed, with extra parking at the northern end via ///rapid.pulse.grass. Just keep an eye on the fairly strict venue rules, especially around mainline strength, no braided mainlines or leaders, structures and overnight stays.
