The full rundown on Rutland Water Fishing
Rutland Water is a serious bit of water. The reservoir covers about 3,100 acres, with roughly 25 miles of shoreline split broadly into the North Arm, South Arm and Main Basin. That gives anglers plenty of water to get their heads around, whether you’re working from the bank or heading out on a boat.
Trout fishing is fly fishing only, with rainbow trout making up most of the stocked catch and brown trout also present. Brownies must be returned alive. The 2026 trout season runs from 14 March 2026 to 31 January 2027, so there’s a decent window for getting clipped up and finding a few fish.
Bank fishing is available, but boats are a big part of the Rutland setup. Day boats, single-person boats, half-day options and sunset hire are all listed for 2026. A boat gives you access to a cracking amount of open water, although sessions are governed by daylight, wind limits and the boat-return time shown at the lodge.
Predator anglers have pike, zander and perch to go at. Predator fly fishing from boats runs from 1 May 2026, while lure and fly fishing runs from 1 September. Sea-deadbaiting starts on 1 October. All pike, perch and zander must go back alive, and predator fishing means barbless or debarbed hooks only.
Tactics depend on the time of year and the area you’re covering. For trout, fly anglers can work the reservoir’s arms and main basin from bank or boat, keeping an eye on wind and daylight. Predator anglers can cover more water from a boat, but trolling under power is a no-no, so it’s all about controlled drifts and working likely water properly.
Normanton Fishing Lodge is the main base, near Edith Weston and Oakham. There’s a tackle shop, the Waterside Café above the lodge, parking, toilets and accessible facilities, plus a Wheelyboat for Blue Badge holders. Permits and boat bookings are available through the official Anglian Water Parks website, and the fishing map marks restricted areas, boat zones and parking.
It’s a venue where planning matters. You’ll need a valid rod licence as well as the fishery permit, and life jackets are compulsory before stepping onto a boat pontoon. Check the permitted season, book the right ticket, pack the correct tackle and you’ll be set for a proper day over a very big reservoir.

How we'd fish Rutland Water Reservoir
trout
Fly fishing for the trout
Stocked lake trout cruise and feed up in the water, so you need to find the depth they're at. Start just under the surface and go deeper if nothing's happening.
- A 9ft 6–7 weight rod with a floating line covers most days; carry an intermediate or sinking line for cold or bright spells.
- Early season and cold days: lures like a Cat's Whisker, Blob or Damsel, pulled back in steady strips.
- Warmer days with fish rising: buzzers, Diawl Bachs or a dry fly fished slowly, or static under an indicator.
- Count your fly down (5, 10, 15 seconds) and change depth till you get a pull — then repeat that count.
- Use 6–8lb fluorocarbon tippet, and check the fishery's rules on catch-and-release, bag limits and barbless hooks before you start.
Venue rule: Bag limits and catch-and-release rules vary a lot on trout waters — ask at the lodge before your first cast.
pike
Lure fishing for the pike
Lures let you cover water and find active pike fast.
- Spinners, jerkbaits and 4–6in soft shads on a 20–30g rod.
- Always use a wire trace — pike bite through mono and fluoro.
- Move every 10–15 casts till you find them; work drop-offs and edges.
zander
Small deadbaits or lures at dusk for zander
Zander hunt in low light and are fussy about resistance, so light, low-resistance rigs and small baits work best.
- Roach or smelt sections on a wire trace with small trebles.
- Use a running rig with a drop-off indicator so they feel nothing.
- On lures, slow soft shads bumped along the bottom at dusk.
perch
Worm or small lure for the perch
Perch hang round cover, boats and drop-offs. A lobworm on a light float, or a small lure worked along the features, will find them.
- Fish lobworm under a float tight to cover.
- On lures, try a small drop shot or soft shad near features.
- Feed chopped worm to keep them in the swim.
