Power Station, Buildwas — TAA

Power Station is one of Telford Angling Association’s three Buildwas stretches on the River Severn. Expect shallower, quicker, rockier water than Dale End Park, with barbel the main draw and plenty of bends to work.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper Severn river fishing, not a tidy little canal job. The Buildwas water is shallower, faster and rockier than TAA’s Dale End Park stretch.
  • Depth varies a fair bit — roughly 1 to 15 feet, depending on the season and weather. Keep an eye on the river; it can change character quickly.
  • There are more bends here than on the Dale End Park section, so look for the crease, steadier inside lines and any comfortable-looking glides.
  • The Power Station stretch has parking along the exit slip road leading towards the former power-station site. Then it’s a walk down to the river.
  • Don’t park on the bridge. TAA is clear on that one. Many swims need steps to reach the water, and the ground can get properly sodden when levels rise.
  • Barbel are the principal target. TAA also names roach, bream, chub, pike, perch, rudd, eel and carp across its Buildwas water. Carp are present only in very low numbers.
  • Traditional ledgering, feeder work and stick-float fishing are all identified as effective methods. Pick the approach to suit the flow and keep searching the bends.
  • A bit of colour and extra pace should suit barbel and chub. In steadier water, a float can be bob on for roach and other silver fish.
  • There’s no separate TAA night permit listed for this water. Adult members aged 18 and over can night fish all year, using a proper fishing bivvy.
  • Take suitable knotless landing nets and fish-care kit. It’s a wild, changing river stretch, so keep your kit sensible and be ready for a bit of a faff getting to some pegs.

Methods: Ledgering and feeder fishing are the obvious starting points for barbel, chub and bream. When the river settles, try a stick float through the steadier glides and crease lines.

Key rules

  • A current Environment Agency rod licence and TAA permit are required.
  • The statutory coarse-fishing closed season on rivers must be observed.
  • Game fishing is not permitted on TAA River Severn stretches.
  • Eel fishing is not permitted on TAA River Severn stretches.
  • All fish must be returned alive.
  • A maximum of three rods per angler is allowed when covered by the appropriate three-rod EA licence.
  • No fires, disposable barbecues or wood-burning equipment are allowed.
  • Camping is prohibited; night fishing must use a proper fishing bivvy.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
