We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is Lymm Angling Club water, sitting above the confluence with the River Tern at Atcham. A proper interesting bit of river, with the junction area bringing extra barbel appeal.
  • The holder describes the stretch as having gliding runs and deep holding pools. That gives you a mix of steady-looking water and stronger, more purposeful flow to pick apart.
  • Specimen-sized barbel, chub, pike and carp are named for this water. Bream, roach and perch are also on the list, so there’s plenty to aim at depending on the river and weather.
  • The confluence is the headline feature. In suitable conditions it’s described as a renowned barbel spot, so that’s the area likely to draw the most attention when the river has a bit of colour and pace.
  • For methods, the water lends itself to barbel-style feeder work and careful legering into the deeper holding water. Trotting and float work should suit the gliding runs when the flow is kind.
  • The club hasn’t published a confirmed length or peg count, so don’t expect a neatly numbered stretch. It’s more a case of walking the water, reading the flow and finding a free swim.
  • Access is from the A49/B4380 route through Atcham. Park at the gated-track entrance before the small bridge over the River Tern, then walk to the end of the track and turn left.
  • The river is about 50 metres from the end of the access track, with parking available there. A combination lock may be fitted, and a club key plus possibly a members-area gate code is needed.
  • No night fishing is allowed above the River Tern. Dogs must be on leads, and vehicles must stay out of the fields beyond the car park. Keep it tidy and fish within the club rules.

Methods: Barbel-style feeder or legering is the obvious starting point around the deeper pools and confluence. When the river settles, try trotting the glides for roach, perch and chub.
