We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is proper barbel water, and Lymm Angling Club reports sessions producing 20 or more barbel. That’s a serious bit of fishing when the river’s on the munch.
- The stretch runs for 300 metres, with slower glides in the mix. Those calmer sections should suit a float, especially if you fancy trotting for roach.
- Barbel are the headline act, but big chub are present too. Keep an eye on the crease and any steady water where fish can sit out of the main push.
- Carp and pike are also present, so there’s a bit more going on than just a barbel chuck. The water has a nicely mixed bag feel.
- For barbel, a feeder approach is the obvious starting point. Pick a steady line, keep things tidy and let the flow do the work.
- Trotting is specifically possible for roach. That slower glide could be the bob-on place to run a float through and search the swim properly.
- Access comes from a side road after driving through Atcham towards Ironbridge. The club gives OS reference SJ 51673 08843, plus coordinates 52.675504, -2.6496309.
- Parking is available in a car park along a gated track, with a further gated field farther along the access road. Park inside the entrance and don’t drive down to the water’s edge.
- No booking or key is required for this stretch, according to the club’s map book. It’s membership water, though, so have your current club card or permit and Environment Agency rod licence with you.
- Poachers Field is a no-dogs water. Treat the banks, fencing, crops, trees and property properly, and remember this is catch and release water. A water receptacle is required for specimen-fish anglers.
Methods: Feeder fishing is the main shout for barbel, while trotting the slower glides gives you a solid roach option. Chub, carp and pike add a few cheeky alternatives depending on conditions.
