STF County Ground
The County Ground is a cracking 1.5-mile Town Waters stretch on the Severn at Shrewsbury. It’s got a car-park section, an upper/showground or Mountfields section, proper platforms and plenty of river to explore.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The stretch sits on a big sweeping bend around Shrewsbury town centre, with the river heading towards the Welsh Bridge at the lower end.
- It’s roughly 50 yards wide through the main section, so there’s room to find a swim without feeling cramped.
- The upper section starts over a shallow, clean gravel bed. From there, the river drops away into a long glide before reaching the main bend.
- The dividing line between the car-park and upper sections is near the hedge and kissing gate beside the cricket pavilion. Handy landmark, that.
- Regular firm fishing platforms are provided through the main County Ground section. Access is comfortable, although the ground behind them can turn slippery after flooding.
- This is a recognised competition venue, with roach, dace, bream, chub and barbel all named as target fish. Perch are also listed among the fishery details.
- Pike fishing is available, particularly through the lower and middle sections. The lower end near the car park can be a proper winter pike option.
- The upper limit has potential for barbel fishing, while the clean gravel, long glide and main bend give you a few different bits of river to work.
- The Severn can get serious here. Major floods may cover the fishery with more than six feet of water, and the car park can flood too. Give the platforms and banks a proper check afterwards.
- You can get into Shrewsbury town centre via the Frankwell footbridge, making this a useful town-centre stretch as well as a fishing venue.
Methods: Trotting and feeder work should suit the glides and mixed riverbed, while legering for barbel or targeting pike in the lower and middle sections gives you a couple of cracking options. Stick to the platforms or keep well clear of other anglers where there are no designated pegs.
