The full rundown on Walsall Canal
Walsall Canal is proper urban canal fishing rather than a tidy commercial lake with a kiosk, café and rows of numbered pegs. It runs from Walsall Town Wharf to Ryder's Green Junction, covering roughly seven miles as part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations.
The canal is managed by the Canal & River Trust, but that does not mean every inch is automatically fishable. Angling is available on designated stretches, subject to the local fishery rights. You’ll need a valid Environment Agency rod licence, and may also need permission from the relevant club or rights holder.
The best-defined stretch in the checked details is the historic Victoria Mews Angling Club section between Midland Road and Willenhall Road. It was reported to accommodate more than 30 anglers, with direct towpath access to some pegs and parking mentioned at several locations. Handy enough, but check the current fishing rights before setting off.
Fish-wise, this is classic canal fare. Roach, rudd, perch, bream, carp, tench, pike, eels, gudgeon and chub have all been historically reported on the Victoria Mews stretch. The canal profile mentioned marginal shelves dropping into deeper central water, so there’s plenty to investigate from the towpath: shelves for a light float approach, margins for a cheeky bonus fish and the middle for a better line when conditions suit.
The reported historical sizes are interesting too, including tench to 8 lb, bream to 7 lb, carp to 12 lb and pike to 22 lb. Treat those as historical reports rather than a promise of what’s waiting in every peg today. Canal fishing can change quickly, especially after major disturbance or recovery work.
A serious cyanide pollution incident affected part of the canal in August 2024, followed by dredging and ecological recovery work. Fishing was prohibited during the 2024 restrictions. The canal reopened for boating in June 2025, while fish and wildlife recovery was still being monitored, so current local conditions and restrictions matter.
For a relaxed session, plan around the peg and the features rather than expecting a full commercial-fishery setup. There are no confirmed fishery-specific toilets, café, tackle shop or car park. Canal & River Trust Lets Fish sessions are a separate option: the 2026 Walsall events were advertised as free, with bait, equipment, permits and licence cover supplied, but they required advance booking and are coached taster sessions rather than normal day tickets.
We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Bait, rigs & seasons
How we'd fish Victoria Mews stretch — Midland Road to Willenhall Road
carp
Chod or helicopter style over soft weed and silt
Where the bottom drops in and out of holes or there might be soft silt or weed, a pop-up that slides up the leader sits over the muck instead of disappearing into it — no need to find a perfectly clean spot.
- Single pop-up, 2–3in off the bottom.
- Fish it as a single hookbait or with a light scattering of freebies — a big bed defeats the point.
- Cast to likely holes and let the lead settle; don't drag it back.
carp
Zigs in the warmer months
In clear, deep water carp often sit up in the layers on warm days. A zig is the only way to get a bait in front of them.
- Start at half depth and move up or down a foot at a time until you get bites.
- Black or foam hookbaits work well on bright days.
- Keep it simple — no freebies needed.
roach
Float maggot for roach
On a mixed lake a waggler and a pint of maggots is the easiest way to keep the float going under all day.
- Feed six to ten maggots every cast.
- Shallow up if bites come on the drop.
- Size 18 hook and light hooklength.
rudd
Floating baits and shallow float for rudd
Rudd feed high in the water, often near reeds and lilies on warm days. Fish up in the water to them, not on the bottom.
- A light waggler set 1–2ft deep with a single maggot or caster on a size 18.
- Loose-feed little and often to bring them up.
- Floating bread flake works brilliantly in summer.
