We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Salisbury Ashley Road on Live River Levels
The lowdown
- This is the Hampshire Avon, also known as the Salisbury or Wiltshire Avon, running through classic chalk-stream country south of Amesbury.
- The Society leases approximately four miles of river, split into two Avon sections upstream and downstream of the riverside Rod Room.
- It’s primarily fly-fishing water, with members able to book beats in advance through the Society’s booking system. Handy, that.
- The usual game is upstream with dry flies and nymphs. Keep things tidy with barbless hooks.
- May and June are the headline months, with the Society describing the Mayfly fishing as outstanding. Hatches can carry on well into July too.
- There’s a healthy population of wild brown trout, alongside stocked fish used to supplement the wild population. The Society describes both wild and stocked opportunities.
- Grayling come into their own from late summer through the end of December, giving the season a proper run after the main trout action.
- Fishing is available by wading and from the bank. Some banks are neatly mown, while other bits have more natural undergrowth, so expect a mix of access and cover.
- The Rod Room gives the fishery a sociable base, with Society memorabilia, a library, flies, fly-tying kit, a meeting room and catering facilities.
- Across the Society’s fisheries there are parking spaces, huts, benches and wading-access posts. The rivers are open every day during the relevant fishing season.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Upstream dry-fly and nymph fishing is the main approach, with Mayfly making May to July especially exciting. Wading and bank fishing are both available, with barbless hooks and catch-and-release for the wild fishing.
