We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Salisbury Ashley Road on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is a scenic bit of Avon with a proper mix of main-river and carrier-style fishing. A cracking setting in the Woodford Valley, and the sort of place where the river does a bit of everything.
  • The top and bottom of the fishery hold deeper water, so don’t just charge straight for the obvious shallows. Those deeper sections are well worth a careful look, especially when the river has a bit of colour or extra push.
  • An island splits the river through part of the beat, giving the water a few different faces. Expect changes in pace, seams and angles rather than one uniform run.
  • Some of the flow diverts through the lively Ham Carrier. That gives you quicker, more energetic water alongside the main river — bob on for working out where fish are sitting.
  • The fishery contains stocked and wild trout, with brown trout, grayling, chub, dace, roach and pike all noted by the Society. Several of these may rise to the fly, so there’s plenty to keep you thinking.
  • Some anglers wade the bottom stretch, but wading isn’t necessary everywhere. Take your time first; there are fishy-looking areas to work from the bank before getting your boots wet.
  • The Society says the water has been improving under keeper Lee, with catches reported as improved in 2025. That’s encouraging stuff for a developing fishery.
  • This is fly-fishing water aimed at Society members. The river’s varied flow means a thoughtful approach should pay off — cover the crease, watch the glides and don’t overlook the carrier.
  • Avon weed-cutting dates apply below Crossing C, including Salterton. Check the current arrangements when booking so you know what’s happening on the river during your visit.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Fly fishing is the main game here, with the main river, deeper sections, island water and lively Ham Carrier all offering different lines to explore. Some bottom-stretch wading is possible, though it isn’t needed throughout the fishery.

Key rules

  • Fishing is for Lloyd’s Flyfishing Society members through the member fishery programme.
  • The private fishery must be booked through the Society’s booking system before fishing.
  • The fishery is intended for fly-fishing members.
  • Check the Society’s Avon weed-cutting dates, which apply below Crossing C, including Salterton.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
