The lowdown

Redesmere is a proper big-water job, not a little commercial pool where you can nip round every swim before lunch. The lake runs for roughly half a mile and covers about 42 acres, with 54 designated fishing pegs. So there’s plenty of water to think about, and finding a peg with a bit of room to work is part of the game.

The full rundown on Redesmere

Redesmere is a proper big-water job, not a little commercial pool where you can nip round every swim before lunch. The lake runs for roughly half a mile and covers about 42 acres, with 54 designated fishing pegs. So there’s plenty of water to think about, and finding a peg with a bit of room to work is part of the game.

Access is restricted to Prince Albert Angling Society members and authorised permit holders. In other words, this isn’t a turn-up-and-pay-a-quid venue. Make sure your permission is current before setting off, and check the latest water map and special conditions with the society. An Environment Agency rod licence is needed as well.

Carp are the big draw, with reported specimen fish reaching around 38 lb. Proper lumps, then, but Redesmere isn’t just a carp pond. Pike, roach, bream, tench and various other silverfish are also present, so there’s scope for a few different approaches depending on the time of year and what the peg is showing you.

Fishing is from designated pegs only, so don’t be tempted to wander off and create your own swim. The lake is close to Redesmere Sailing Club and is also used for sailing and other water activities. Keep the kit tidy, stay aware of what’s happening on the lake and be prepared to adjust your plans if there’s activity on the water. A quick word with the bailiff or society before fishing is always bob on, especially if you’re new to a big venue.

Night fishing is allowed for members, but the maximum stay is 48 hours. After that, anglers must leave the water and car park for at least 24 hours. That makes a tidy couple of nights possible, but it’s not an excuse for a never-ending bivvy campaign. Pack for a focused session, bring sensible big-water tackle and have a plan for moving on if your first area doesn’t show signs of life.

The close season runs from midnight on 30 April until 08:00 on 1 July, with fishing strictly prohibited during that period. A peg draw takes place at 07:00 on 1 July, after which members can fish any remaining vacant pegs. There’s public parking and a picnic area beside the lake, plus a public footpath along parts of the eastern shore, while the western shore has no general public access. Keepnets and carp sacks are not allowed except during official matches, and stoves are permitted. Check all the current rules before travelling, then keep things simple, respectful and properly organised on the bank.

We're not sure on ticket prices here — we couldn't find reliable, up-to-date prices online, so give the fishery a ring or check their own site before you go.
