Trevor Section, River Dee

Plan a session

The Trevor Section is a varied bit of River Dee water run by Llangollen Maelor Angling, with pools, gravel runs and rocky channels mapped between the Llangollen area, Trevor and Froncysyllte. Proper scenic fishing, with named swims including Lingo Pool, The Rocks, Sand Hole, Dwy Craig and Slaughter House Pool.

River level

River level integration coming for this stretch.

My River Watch isn't available here — we haven't matched a level gauge to this stretch, and we won't guess one.

The lowdown

  • This is part of roughly 10 miles of River Dee fishing controlled by the association, so there’s plenty of water to explore rather than just one short peg-filled stretch.
  • The map picks out Lingo Pool, The Rocks, Sand Hole, Dwy Craig, Slaughter House Pool, Sun Pool, Big Rock, Sun Bank, Abercregan and Aqueduct Pool. A cracking mix of features.
  • Expect varied water: deeper pools, steady runs, gravelly bits and rocky channels. There should be plenty to keep both a float angler and a fly fisher busy.
  • Fishing is only allowed from the specified banks shown on the association’s map. Other banks are marked as no fishing, so have a proper look before settling into a swim.
  • Anglers must move downstream steadily and keep at least 20 yards apart. Salmon anglers have priority at all times, so give them room and don’t hog the crease.
  • Trout and grayling fishing is fly-only upstream of the Chain Bridge Hotel. Spinning for trout and grayling is banned, and no maggots are allowed on the Llangollen beats.
  • The water holds salmon, sea trout, brown trout and grayling. The association also reports dace, chub, roach and pike on its lower beats, though those are not specifically tied to this Trevor section.
  • Pike fishing is allowed from 18 October to the last day of February, using dead bait or lures. Lures must be at least 5 inches long and fitted with one single barbless or de-barbed hook.
  • Parking is shown at lay-bys, Sun Trevor, the golf-club overflow, a farm car park, beneath the aqueduct, canal-side spots and Ty Mawr Country Park. Park at your own risk, keep gates and private drives clear, and take litter home.

Methods: Fly fishing is required for trout and grayling upstream of the Chain Bridge Hotel, while the varied pools, runs and gravel water offer plenty of scope elsewhere within the rules. Pike can be targeted in season with dead bait or suitably rigged lures.

Key rules

  • A valid NRW or Environment Agency rod licence is required.

  • Camping, fires, shooting, canoeing and boat launching require permission.
  • Anglers must move downstream steadily and remain at least 20 yards apart.
  • Salmon anglers have priority at all times, and all salmon must be returned quickly.
  • Spinning for trout and grayling is prohibited. Trout and grayling fishing is fly-only upstream of the Chain Bridge Hotel.
  • Pike fishing is allowed from 18 October to the last day of February using dead bait or lures. Lures must be at least 5 inches long with a single barbless or de-barbed hook.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
