We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a wide, shallow flash in places, with the Dockyard side giving you the deeper water. A decent mix of features, then, rather than a one-trick pony.
  • The stretch has a cracking industrial backdrop, shaped by its old salt-working and barge-loading past. Proper Cheshire river character.
  • The bottom flash holds pike, bream, roach, eels and perch. Occasional tench and carp add a cheeky bonus when they show.
  • The deeper Dockyard side is the place for bream, roach, eel and hybrid fishing. Keep an eye on the water and fish the depth rather than forcing it.
  • Carp turn up around snags and former barge-sinking areas. Snags can appear or disappear after floods, so the swim can change a fair bit.
  • The adjoining bay has produced carp and tench. The Dockyard reed beds are also used by spawning pike, so there’s plenty of cover to pick apart.
  • For pike, dead-baits and lures are both used. For the silverfish, a feeder or trotting-style approach is the obvious river-bank game, depending on the flow.
  • It’s open all year, and up to 48-hour night fishing is allowed with the right permit arrangements. Handy if you fancy a proper overnighter.
  • Access is listed via the marina car park alongside the A54, reached on foot over the traffic-island bridge. Cow Lane is drop-off and pick-up only, so don’t leave the motor there.
  • There are pegs 231 to 214 across the listed Rilshaw Lane and Dockyard lengths. Three rods are allowed on the Weaver with the correct EA licence.

Methods: Feeder and trotting approaches suit the bream, roach, eel and perch, while dead-baits or lures are used for pike. Carp anglers should work the snags and former barge-sinking areas carefully.

  • Specimen fish and carp must not be retained in keepnets or carp sacks.
