We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a broad, shallow bit of Weaver rather than a typical narrow river swim. WDAA classes it as still water, so the pace should suit feeder work and patient fishing.
  • The marked pegs start just before the public gate. WDAA fishing rights run along the section to the caravan-park fence. The opposite bank is the Rilshaw and Dockyard length, which isn’t included here.
  • Feeder tackle is the main shout for bream, roach, eels and hybrids. Look for any crease, slightly deeper line or feature where the shallow flash gives way to a steadier bit of water.
  • Carp are found around the snags where loaded barges were sunk after the Victorian salt works. Proper interesting old river features, but fish them carefully and keep the gear sensible.
  • There’s a shallow bay at the end of the field that has produced carp and tench. Platts Field adjoins Ways Green too, offering more bream and carp fishing.
  • Pike can be targeted with dead-baits and lures. The changing character — flash water, bays, snags and old salt-loading features — gives you a few different approaches to try.
  • Fishing is permitted throughout the year on this still-water section. During the close season, from 15 March to 15 June, no keepnets may be used.
  • Access is from Cow Lane or the marina car park beside the A54. Cow Lane is drop-off and pick-up only, with no parking allowed. From the marina, cross the traffic-island bridge on foot.
  • Barbecues are allowed at Ways Green, but used coals must be taken home. Night fishing is available for up to 72 hours with the correct night stamp, and sessions must be booked through the WDAA website.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Feeder fishing is the obvious starting point for the bream, roach, eels and hybrids, while carp gear suits the snags and the shallow bay. Try dead-baits or lures for pike, and keep an eye on the quieter features rather than only fishing the open flash.
