The lowdown
- You get a decent bit of water here: roughly 1,000 metres of main river, plus another 950 metres of smaller carrier. Plenty to explore on foot.
- This is single-bank fishing, with access from the parking area at Woodsford Bridge. The club points members towards Clubmate for SatNav help with access points and parking.
- The water is described as suitable for wild brown trout and grayling. Grayling are a real feature, with classic long trotting available in the winter months.
- The club reports grayling over 3 lb being caught each year. That’s a proper fish, and enough to make the winter wander worthwhile.
- Sea trout are known to be present, while salmon turn up occasionally but are rarely reported. Keep the club’s migratory-fish rules firmly in mind.
- Game fishing runs from 1 April to 14 October. You must book through the Clubmate app before fishing, and there’s no access during the game season without a booking.
- The public venue details don’t set out Tincleton-specific fly, bait, spinning or wading rules. Check the members handbook before heading out, rather than guessing.
- Coarse fishing is permitted from 15 October to 14 March. Spinners, spoons and Devon minnows are prohibited for coarse and pike lure fishing to reduce the risk of hooking out-of-season salmon and sea trout.
- It’s a quiet, no-faff sort of setup: no guests, no dogs and no night fishing. Parking is in the layby on the right at Woodsford Bridge, after crossing the first stretch of river.
Methods: The venue is marked as game fishing, with trout and grayling the main draw, but the club does not publish Tincleton-specific permitted fly, bait or spinning methods. Check the members handbook for the current method rules before fishing.

Rigs & methods
- Typical approach, not confirmed at this stretch
Fly fishing to the flow
River trout hold where food is delivered by the current. Most trout waters are fly-only — check the rights holder's rules first.
How to set it up
- Upstream nymph or dry fly in the riffles and glides.
- Approach from downstream and keep low.
Typical kit: Rod: 8–9ft #4–5 · Tippet: light fluorocarbon or copolymer. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.
Bait to consider
- Flies only on most trout waters — check the lodge rules
- Bait/worm ONLY where expressly permitted
Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.
When it suits
Depends on the water's season and stocking — ask the lodge what's open.
General seasonal pattern, not a forecast.
Check the rules

Feeder or straight lead with pellet
Barbel feed hard on the bottom in the faster, gravelly runs and in front of snags. A bait held still on the bottom over a little feed is the standard starting point.
How to set it up
- Find steadier water by a crease, gravel run or overhanging cover.
- Use enough lead to hold bottom without rolling — go up in weight before you go up in bait.
- Fish a pellet or small boilie on a hair, with a modest bed of feed.
- Play fish firmly and rest them in the net, head upstream, before release.
Typical kit: Rod: 1.75–2lb barbel rod · Line: strong, abrasion-resistant mono · Feeder: open-end or cage, heavy enough to hold. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.
Bait to consider
- Halibut pellet
- Small boilie or meat
- Hemp and pellet feed (where allowed)
Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.
When it suits
Summer to autumn; warm evenings and a bit of colour often help.
