The lowdown
- This is club water downstream of the club’s Tincleton fishery, split into an Upper Beat, Lower Beat and the North Stream.
- The Upper Beat is the tidy, organised option: book it through the Clubmate app and it’s exclusive for up to two rods for the day.
- The Lower Beat and North Stream are open beats during the game season. Eligible members can fish these without booking.
- From 1 April to 14 October, it’s strictly game fishing only, with traditional game-fishing tackle and methods required. Proper fly-water territory.
- The game season is shared by brown trout, grayling, salmon and sea trout, with pike also listed among the venue species.
- Once 15 October arrives, specimen grayling become the main quarry. Coarse methods are allowed, but the club asks anglers to float fish for grayling only.
- Legering and swim feeders are discouraged for grayling conservation, so keep it light and tidy rather than reaching for loads of kit.
- For coarse pike and lure fishing, spinners, spoons and Devon minnows are prohibited. Check the venue rules before chucking anything.
- Access is from Waddock Drove off the B3390. Turn into the lane at the crossroads, then take the third farm track on the left. The route crosses the North Stream and follows the river.
- Members can use Clubmate for access-point and parking navigation. Toilets are available, but dogs, night fishing and extended hours are not allowed.
Methods: Use traditional game-fishing tackle and methods from 1 April to 14 October. From 15 October to 14 March, float fishing is requested for grayling; legering and swim feeders are discouraged.

Rigs & methods
- Typical approach, not confirmed at this stretch
Fly fishing to the flow
River trout hold where food is delivered by the current. Most trout waters are fly-only — check the rights holder's rules first.
How to set it up
- Upstream nymph or dry fly in the riffles and glides.
- Approach from downstream and keep low.
Typical kit: Rod: 8–9ft #4–5 · Tippet: light fluorocarbon or copolymer. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.
Bait to consider
- Flies only on most trout waters — check the lodge rules
- Bait/worm ONLY where expressly permitted
Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.
When it suits
Depends on the water's season and stocking — ask the lodge what's open.

Deadbait in slacks and eddies
River pike often sit out of the flow in slacks, bays and eddies. A static deadbait there is the traditional approach — only where deadbaits are allowed.
How to set it up
- Fish the slacker water and back eddies.
- Wire trace, strike early, and have long forceps and a mat ready.
- Check the rights holder's predator rules and season before you go.
Typical kit: Trace: wire, 18in+ · Rod: 2.75–3lb pike rod. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.
Bait to consider
- Sea deadbaits (sardine, smelt, mackerel) where deadbaits are allowed
- Lures: spinners, shads, jerkbaits
- Livebait ONLY where the venue and law allow
Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
