How to fish here

For The Millpond: what to try first, why, and the rules to check.

We haven't found verified local tips for this water yet, so what's below is general practical advice for the fish listed — not reports from here.

Target species

Rigs & methods

  • General technique — not verified here

A neat lead-clip rig over a light scattering of bait

When you don't know the lake well yet, the simplest approach is the best start: a reliable bottom bait rig on a clean spot, with just enough bait to get a bite without filling them up.

    How to set it up
    • Feel the lead down to find a firm spot, then clip up so you hit it every cast.
    • Fish a single boilie or wafter with 20–30 freebies around it.
    • Leave one rod roving and recast it to showing fish.

Typical kit: Boilies: 15mm boilies · Hook: wide gape size 6–8 · Hooklink: coated braid or fluoro · Main line: 15lb mono. Starting points only — match line and hook to the venue rules and the fish present.

Bait to consider

  • Boilies or wafters
  • Pellet
  • Sweetcorn or tiger nuts (only where nuts are allowed)
  • Bread on the surface in warm weather

Common starting baits, not a local "top bait". Bait bans override everything here.

When it suits

Usually most active late spring to autumn; slower in deep winter. Warm, settled spells often see fish higher in the water.

General seasonal pattern, not a forecast.

Check the rules

  • Night fishing? No — Dawn till dusk only – no night fishing.
  • Hooks Required — Barbless hooks only, size 8 maximum.
  • Nets and mats Required — Use a landing net and an unhooking mat, and dip both in the net dip (opposite reception).
  • Baits Check with the venue — Boilies from a reputable brand only (ask staff if unsure); bait in plastic boxes. No nuts or unprepared particles, artificial baits or tinned/wet cat and dog food.

The full rundown on Millpond

Here's the useful stuff for the Millpond, as listed on its own website when we checked on 26 October 2026. Big thing first: it's a private lake for on-site campers only, so you'll need to be staying on the 102-pitch Camping and Caravanning Club site (non-members are welcome) to wet a line.

Once you're pitched up, tickets are sold in the on-site shop (card) or around the lake (cash). There are day, afternoon (from 1pm) and weekly tickets, plus a loyalty card – fill it up and you get a free day on two rods.

The season runs from March to October and it's dawn till dusk only – no night fishing. Under-15s need an adult with them, and you'll need an EA rod licence.

It's a carp-friendly set of rules: barbless hooks only (size 8 max), free-running rigs, reputable boilies, and dip your landing net and unhooking mat in the net dip opposite reception before you start.

There's wheelchair access, and pegs can be reserved for anglers with mobility difficulties. Dog walking around the lake isn't allowed, but you can fish with your dog on a short lead along the railway side, up to the overflow.

Before you book, confirm current camping availability, tickets and opening with the site.
