Upper Breinton

Upper Breinton is a peaceful, relatively untouched Middle Wye beat about four miles upstream from Hereford. It’s a short bank-fishing stretch, with bedrock pinching the river into a proper deep pool and chub, barbel and the usual Wye coarse fish on the cards.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a relatively virgin piece of fishing, with no road noise to spoil the peace. Proper quiet Wye stuff.
  • The fishable bank runs for approximately 143 yards (130 metres). It’s bank fishing only, with a maximum of three tickets available per day.
  • Two big bedrock intrusions upstream and downstream squeeze the flow into a deep pool. That pinch point is the obvious feature to have a good look at.
  • The water is described as suitable habitat for chub and barbel, while the wider Middle Wye section holds the usual coarse mix too.
  • Chub are well worth tackling around the crease and any steadier water beside the main push. A controlled feeder or trotted bait should suit the flow.
  • Barbel are the other big draw. Look for depth, pace and the calmer edges around the pool, especially when the river has a bit of colour in it.
  • Pike fishing is permitted, so there’s scope for a cheeky lure or deadbait session alongside the coarse fishing.
  • Maggots are allowed under a specific dispensation from 16 June to 14 September. Outside that window, check your approach carefully before fishing.
  • Vehicle access may be available right to the bank, although it isn’t guaranteed after rain. A 4x4 isn’t normally needed. If parking at the entrance, it’s roughly a 400-metre walk.
  • The beat operates a wash-off policy. Catch and release applies to every species, and the online catch return must be completed after fishing.

Methods: A cracking little spot for chub and barbel tactics, with trotting, feeder work and sensible pike fishing all permitted within the beat rules. Fish the bedrock pinch, the deep pool and the steadier edges rather than just hammering the main flow.
