Upper Canon Bridge

Upper Canon Bridge is a cracking little Wye beat about six miles upstream of Hereford. It’s a secluded, relatively slow-flowing right-bank stretch with plenty of bankside cover and room for two anglers.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a compact beat of roughly half a mile, tucked away on the Herefordshire Wye. Proper quiet-water feel.
  • Fishing is on the right bank only, with steps built in to make getting down to the swims a bit less of a faff.
  • The river is officially described as relatively slow flowing, so it should suit a relaxed coarse approach rather than a full-on chuck into a raging flow.
  • Bankside cover is a big part of the appeal. Fish can tuck themselves into the snags, edges and shaded bits, so work the crease and any cover carefully.
  • The beat is suitable for two anglers, with up to two coarse rods allowed per day. That gives you room to switch between a float line and a feeder swim.
  • Trotting looks the obvious starting point where the pace allows, especially through steadier glides. A light feeder is the other bob-on option for holding a bait near cover.
  • Chub, perch, barbel and roach are among the named coarse species for the Canon Bridge area, with pike also listed. There’s a decent mix to keep things interesting.
  • The wider Canon Bridge species list also includes grayling, salmon, sea trout, brown trout, gudgeon, bleak and dace. Keep the approach tidy and fish the water in front of you.
  • Upper Canon Bridge can be booked alongside Lower Canon Bridge for parties of up to six, but the short section between the two bridges remains private fishing at all times.
  • It’s a day-ticket beat through The Fishing Passport. Catch and release applies to every fish, and dogs aren’t permitted on the beat.

Methods: Start with a float and a steady trot through the slower glides, then switch to a feeder when fish are tight to the bankside cover. Keep casts tidy around the features and don’t overlook the crease.
