River Nene, Woodford Island
Woodford Island is a quiet, secluded River Nene stretch above Woodford Lock, run by Nene Anglers. You get the main river, an island backwater and plenty of scope for both roving and sitting it out.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Islip Sluice on Live River Levels

The lowdown
- This is a proper countryside bit of the Nene, with a lovely quiet feel rather than a busy commercial fishery. Handy when you fancy a peaceful day and a bit of space.
- The stretch sits above the lock at Woodford and takes in both the main river and a backwater looping around the island. The island itself can be fished from its banks.
- On the main river, the right bank can be followed upstream towards Woodford village. The left-bank upstream section runs as far as the weir shown on the fishery map.
- Keep below that weir. Fishing above it is prohibited, so it’s one to clock before settling into a swim.
- There’s enough variety here for different moods. Go mobile and rove the quieter edges, or pick a swim and fish a static approach. Bob on either way.
- The water is described as mixed coarse fishing, with roach, bream, chub, perch, pike and carp named for the stretch. Plenty to keep an eye out for as conditions change.
- The close season runs from 15 March through 15 June inclusive. Outside that, fishing times are 03:00-23:00 from June to September, then 04:00-21:00 from October to March.
- Access is through the locked gate off Grange Road, Woodford. You’ll need the code from the Clubmate app, and the track entrance is also used for Ranger World.
- Park beside the river on the grassed area near the bridge, but leave room for tractors and farm access. Relock and reset the gate and padlocks when you’re in or out.
Methods: A flexible one. Roving the island and quieter margins should suit a mobile approach, while the main river also lends itself to a settled static session. Trotting or feeder-style fishing can be considered, but the checked details don’t specify particular tactics.
