Winthorpe Lake (15 acres) + 650m River Trent
Winthorpe Lake gives you 15 acres of fairly open water, plus around 650m of adjoining River Trent. It’s an Ashfield Angling Club venue with good access, spaced-out pegs and a cheeky mix of lake and river species.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The lake is generally 7–8ft deep at normal level, so there’s plenty of water to work without hunting for dramatic depth changes.
- The bottom is a mix of silt and gravel, and it’s fairly flat with no bars. Margins slope away gradually from the shallows.
- There’s little or no weed according to the club, which keeps things fairly tidy for feeder work, float fishing and carp approaches.
- Lake levels follow the River Trent and can rise or fall quickly. Keep an eye on conditions, as the water can change its mood sharpish.
- The pegs are spaced out, and access to the water’s edge is generally good. Nice and straightforward rather than a full-on faff.
- For the river, expect a proper Trent job: flow, changing levels and river features rather than the steady lake setup. The section is about 650m long.
- Trotting, feeder fishing and barbel or chub tactics are the obvious river approaches from the named species. A bit of colour could be well worth having.
- The lake is open all year, while the River Trent section follows the river close-season rules. Night fishing is permitted at Winthorpe.
- There are three designated no-fishing areas on the lake, set aside to protect fish and wildlife. Don’t fish them, and don’t prune trees or reeds either.
- Cars can be parked behind every river peg. Access to the river is through the lake access gate, which must be closed and locked after use. Drive slowly through the village and local lanes.
Methods: On the lake, feeder, float and carp tactics suit the steady depth, silt-and-gravel bottom and sparse weed. On the Trent, trotting and feeder work are the natural starting points, with barbel and chub named for the river section.
